Contract type: Temporary contract over the summer period 2018
Salary: Voluntary with travel and subsistence expenses
Hours: Ideally we are looking for people to work full time for the duration of the project, but part-time and shorter term candidates will be considered.
Reports to: All our Trees Project Coordinator
The post holder will be employed by the Community Forest Trust (Charity number 1072706) on behalf of City of Trees

What work will the post involve?

City of Trees is pleased to offer the opportunity for motivated individuals to join an exciting field survey team as we work to develop a Tree and Woodland Strategy for Greater Manchester.

Urban trees are something many of us take for granted and very little is known about the benefits they provide. This project aims to establish a baseline and put a financial value on the amenity, air pollution, carbon storage and sequestration, and storm water benefits of Greater Manchester’s trees.

City of Trees is working with Forest Research and Treeconomics to develop a comprehensive model of the function and structure of Greater Manchester’s urban forest using the USDA Forest Service’s suite of i-Tree tools. i-Tree Eco is a state of the art, peer reviewed software system that uses tree measurements and other data to estimate ecosystem services and structural characteristics of the urban forest. A sample based assessment involves sampling data from across the whole of Greater Manchester to generate a reliable estimate of the whole urban forest canopy in terms of its structure, ecosystem services it delivers, and the value of those services to Greater Manchester’s economy.

We are looking to form a core team of field surveyors and assistant surveyors to work over the summer to visit and gather data from randomly located plots across all Greater Manchester. Following full training at City of Trees offices, surveyor teams of 2-3 will be issued with maps, survey sheets and survey equipment, as well as letters of introduction, and be required to survey several plots each day, gathering data on tree species, tree height, tree health and land cover.

Full training is provided, and you will learn a range of survey techniques. Anyone with an interest in trees or field work is encouraged to apply.

Main duties of the post will include:

  1. To assist with project delivery in line with the project lead
  2. To travel to different sites across Greater Manchester to carry out plot and tree surveys
  3. To work with a range of organisations and individuals to gain access to land
  4. To carry out plot and tree surveys accurately
  5. To assist with project evaluation
  6. To assist with quality checking and quality sampling
  7. To undertake informal and formal training as agreed
  8. To carry out duties with full regard to Equal Opportunities and Health and Safety policies
  9. To work in a flexible manner and undertake any other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time
