We are looking for several friendly and enthusiastic volunteers to help us to inspire local communities to maintain and improve grasslands in and around York. It is a perfect opportunity for someone looking to gain experience in habitat management and conservation.

About St Nicks:

Friends of St Nicholas Fields (working name St Nicks) is York’s leading organisation promoting sustainable living. We started by transforming a former landfill site into a thriving Local Nature Reserve (LNR) and we continue to manage it with over the help of over 250 volunteers. From our eco-friendly base at St Nicks Environment Centre we run projects and services that help residents of York move towards a sustainable future. These include a low-emissions kerbside recycling collection, environmental education programme and year-round community events.

About the role:

This is a flexible role that can be tailored to suit your experience and interests. Duties can include delivering training sessions to project groups (practical, theory and monitoring training), helping to develop monitoring and management plans and assist with their delivery at project sites, work with groups to help recruit and engage new volunteers and the wider public and to help plan and deliver Meadow Keepers events to raise awareness of the project among other duties.

You will receive:

  • Regular supervision and on-going support to help monitor your progress and help with personal development;
  • In-house and external training tailored to the candidates individual’s interests and needs;
  • Help with CVs, job applications and a reference upon successful completion of your traineeship;
  • Contribution towards local travel expenses.

Skills and abilities needed for this role:

  • Enthusiasm for wildlife, conservation and the outdoors;
  • Some experience of leading groups would be beneficial;
  • Some experience of practical conservation tasks would be beneficial;
  • Friendly and approachable in nature with the ability to get along with people from all backgrounds;
  • Reliable and committed to the role;
  • Able to use initiative.

Timeframe:

Length of Commitment: 4 months minimum
Total Hours: Flexible – Weekend and evenings required to fit around groups

Role to be commenced as soon as possible. 

Our volunteer opportunities are designed to offer work experience. The role will be managed by the Volunteer Co-ordinator and Nature Reserve Manager and the successful candidate will gain experience of working within the St Nicks team.
