Groundwork South exists to make a difference to people’s lives both in the community and in the environment. With over 25 years’ experience of working with communities and other partners, we provide the right services to enable people to make positive changes in their lives to create a lasting difference from themselves and their communities.

The role

As a volunteer or naturalist at a BioBlitz you are the first point of contact for visitors to the event so it is important that you are able to give them some context and explain what a BioBlitz is and why we are doing it!

We are seeking nature enthusiasts to support the community in finding and identifying the wildlife we encounter at the Paignton BioBlitz on June 23rd 2018.

Supported by our friendly team and working directly with the Community Green Spaces Project Manager, the BioBlitz Volunteers will gain experience in supporting and delivering community horticulture and conservation activities in our public open spaces. The Horticulture and Conservation Volunteer will directly contribute to increasing Groundwork South’s capacity to deliver activities which have a positive benefit on the health and wellbeing of the Torbay communities.

Main tasks you may undertake:

  • Accompany arranged walks, supporting understanding (you will be working with an experienced naturalist, so identification skills are not essential, but you will be able to opt for a group which interests you).
  • Help to set up the basecamp
  • Helping to man the ‘basecamp’ and help with identification from i.d. guides and passing difficult identification to our team of experts.
  • Stewarding the event – directing people to support, informing the lead workers of any issues.
  • Help participants to record their findings…
  • Enjoy the activities on offer and have fun!

This role may require a DBS (Data and Barring Service) check to ensure the suitability of volunteers to work with children and/or adults who may be vulnerable. There is no cost to the volunteer for this check.

ABOUT YOU:

You will have good interpersonal skills and be happy to engage with a wide public audience and varied age range of participants

An interest in wildlife

Identification skills (of any group) are useful, but not essential

You will need to have an adequate level of fitness to carry, move and use equipment and materials

You should be available on 23rd June from 9am and for a half day training session (dates TBC)

WHAT WE OFFER:

You can expect to build knowledge in running a BioBlitz event, engagement and gain invaluable personal development.

The opportunity to take skills forward with our surveying and monitoring projects across the Bay.
