Practical Residential Volunteer

Northward Hill, Kent

Volunteer • Full Time 01634222480 Ruby Merriman

Sectors: conservation & wildlife, ecology

Closing date: Tuesday, 31st July 2018

We're looking for an enthusiastic residential volunteer to help our reserve team in the North Kent Marshes to deliver nature conservation on the ground. The overall purpose is to assist the reserve team to carry out the weekly work programme of habitat management, estate work and biological monitoring. We have a diverse range of habitats including grazing marsh, woodland, reedbed, scrub, grassland and brackish lagoons. Tasks will likely include:

  • Breeding bird surveys (until June)
  • Productivity surveys for breeding waders
  • Monitoring of black-winged stilt
  • Butterfly transects
  • Predator fence maintenance
  • Trail checks and path clearance
  • Infrastructure repairs and maintenance
  • Health and safety checks of tools, equipment and machinery
  • Assisting with the management of volunteer work days
  • Public engagement tasks including events and blogs

This vacancy is a first come first served role, so will be taken down once it has been filled with suitable candidates. It is a particularly good opportunity for current students in a relevant field to gain experience in the conservation sector, and get a taster for what practical reserve management is all about in the summer months!

Full time role. Minimum commitment 4 weeks, May- September 2018.

You have to be 18 years old or over with a full driving license for this role. Other than that all we ask is that you are willing to get stuck into manual labour in all weathers, enjoy working in small teams and have a general interest in wildlife.
