Why we want you

We want people coming onto our reserve to be met with a smile. You will actively provide a friendly and informative welcome to all visitors, enthuse about wildlife and the RSPB.

Tasks will include:

  • Welcoming visitors to the reserve and ensuring they know where to go on the reserve to see our wildlife and to enjoy the trails.
  • Engaging with family visitors and giving them any information that they may require e.g. seasonal trail sheets, wildlife bingo cards.
  • Being an ambassador for the RSPB, encouraging support through membership and actively carrying out membership recruitment.
  • Helping to answer any queries and providing information.
  • Assisting in the daily organisation of visitor facilities within the visitor centre.

RSPB membership really is the lifeblood of the Society and underpins every single thing we do. It helps us fund nature conservation work here and across the UK - not only the ongoing land management of our reserves but also by creating and enhancing magnificent wild spaces for nature and people to enjoy. It is therefore important that you can inspire people about the work we do and warm them up to the idea of membership.

What’s in it for you?

You will be part of a friendly and enthusiastic team who dedicate their time to this special nature reserve. You'll have a chance to share your enthusiasm for nature with others and gain a valuable insight into the RSPB's work. A wonderful opportunity to meet new people, staff and fellow volunteers. You'll be making a real difference to the work of the RSPB. You will receive training in all aspects of the role, including membership recruitment.

The skills you need

You'll need:

  • to be good with people, with a friendly disposition,
  • enthusiasm for the RSPB and wildlife,
  • tact and diplomacy,
  • the confidence to strike up conversations with visitors and a desire to help,
  • the ability to listen and respond appropriately,
  • to be reliable and punctual.

Your time

Minimum commitment: 1/2 day or 1 day per week, including weekends

Duration: ongoing

Period: all year round

Notes

The RSPB is the country's largest nature conservation charity, inspiring everyone to give nature a home. Providing exceptional visitor experience requires a 'one team' approach and at times you may be required to assist with other areas of work e.g. retail.

Appropriate training will be provided as well as a uniform.

Travel expenses are available (within 25 mile radius). The RSPB relies on the support and generosity of volunteers to make a difference and it would be great if you could join us.
