Electronics Guru @ SHRUB Co-operative:

Volunteer Role Summary:

The swapshop has been running at the SHRUB on a volunteer basis since 2013. This is one of the key aspects of the SHRUB as a centre for sustainable living, allowing people to swap and share towards a more circular economy. Currently we are unable to rehome electronic items that the public donate due to PAT testing laws, but we want to go further and create a system for our electronic donations that meets our sector’s best practice! We are currently working towards Revolve accreditation, leading to higher standards for the goods we accept and display - with an aim to show that ‘second hand is not second best’. That’s where you can help.

We are looking for a few organised and innovative volunteers who are competent with electronics (for both PAT Testing and minor fixing), who can create and follow processes, as well as being able to communicate them to others or even train other people.

Min. 3hrs, max. 16hrs per week. Shifts: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday.

  • Following the new systems and processes for electrical donations, including - where do they go, how are they processed, what price structure should be used, producing guidance/training for current and future volunteers
  • PAT testing electronics, and ensuring the highest quality of preloved products
  • Being consistent and punctual: be there when you say you will
  • Acting with integrity, make sure everything is done fairly and professionally
  • Using your initiative. Look around and see what needs to be done, prioritise what should be dealt with first, then do it.
  • Respecting the customers and volunteers.
  • Greet people who come in the SHRUB warmly, make them feel welcome, even if you’re tired and grumpy.
  • Meeting up once in a while with the Swapshop Facilitator (Joe) to have a check-up and see how things are progressing.

  • Gain experience in the Third Sector, Co-operative Business, Social Enterprise, Retail, and Sustainability.
  • Regular social events and opportunities to get together with the rest of the Shrub
  • Support when entering employment
    • With references
    • With other aspects such as help framing your volunteer experience in the most impressive light possible.
  • First dibs on stuff that comes in through the swapshop!
  • Food to sustain your energies through the shift
  • Great experience working for Edinburgh only Sustainability Co-op, on the front-lines of public perception-changing
  • Training and personal development opportunities
  • Support, from the Swapshop Facilitator, other volunteers and from the Welfare Working Group
  • A warm fuzzy feeling that you’re doing a great thing for Edinburgh, the community, and the environment!

What are we looking for in an applicant?:

  • Competent to fix electrical items (qualification not necessary)
  • Consistency and punctuality
  • Ability to both follow a process and critique/improve it
  • Act with integrity
  • Can work effectively with people in a consensus-based organisation, good social skills and empathy
  • Able to prioritise tasks and get stuff done

Benefits to others:

Through volunteering with the Shrub, you will be supporting our local and global community. Our work aims to reduce waste and change people's opinions of it, through swapping, repairing and upcycling. This has benefits for the local circular economy and, through reduced carbon emissions, benefits to our planet.
