Wildlife Trainees (Conservation) x2

Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust

Warburg Reserve near Henley, Oxfordshire

Volunteer • Part Time

Sectors: conservation & wildlife, ecology

Closing date: Friday, 30th March 2018

We are looking to recruit two volunteer Wildlife Trainees to assist with habitat management, maintenance of infrastructure, ecological survey and visitor engagement.

High up in the Chiltern Hills, Warburg Nature Reserve is a magnificent place, known for its wild, remote tranquillity. It is particularly renowned for its fifteen species of orchid, wide range of invertebrates and huge variety of fungi. The information centre provides a focal point for visitors and a base for educational work.

The Wildlife Trainee role involves practical conservation on the reserve; restoring and improving habitats for wildlife. Trainees will help to look after our livestock, repair and install site infrastructure, use power tools and machinery, conduct species surveys and carry out activities with volunteers. We would also like the Trainees to be able to chat to visitors and deliver guided walks after some training. There is also an opportunity to assist other Oxfordshire teams with environmental education and events.

Alongside the day-to-day learning experiences, all Trainees will receive a substantial amount of training. This will include external training such as the First Aid at Work +Forestry certificate and other training such as NPTC certification in chainsaw felling small trees. There is also a programme of in-house training including Leading Practical Groups, Conservation Grazing Theory, Livestock Handling, Botany and Presentation Skills. Limited travel expenses are also available.

The position would suit those wishing to develop the skills required to follow a career in the conservation sector. Applicants should have a keen interest in UK wildlife conservation, learning and imparting conservation knowledge, a good level of physical fitness, a valid UK driving licence and be willing to supervise and lead volunteers. Relevant volunteering experience is also desirable. Please see the Role Description for a full list of essential and desirable criteria. Hours: A commitment of 3 days per week for 6-12 months is essential. Days: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. The ability to attend occasional days at weekends would be desirable, for which time off in lieu would be given. Please be aware that this is an unpaid position.
