As a member of the ranger team on the stunning 12,500 acre Holnicote Estate you will gain experience in a huge variety of practical conservation skills, assist with the co-ordination and management of local volunteers, help deliver events and wildlife surveys.

We pride ourselves on providing a first class volunteer ranger experience, offering comprehensive structured learning throughout the year. Placements are for 6 to 12 months during which time the skills and learning available include the following;

Initial training – Safety in the outdoors, Emergency first aid course, off road driving course, e-modules for manual handling, fire awareness and risk assessments.

Monthly training;

January - Hedgelaying

February – Strimmer training

March – Moorland and heathland management including annual swaling programme

April – Lantra certificated brushcutter course

May – Introduction to dormouse and bird surveying and bird ringing techniques

June – Introduction to butterfly surveying techniques including High Brown and Heath Fritillary butterflies

July – Managing working holidays and event planning

August – Wild Wednesday event planning, delivery and evaluation

September – Lantra certificated chainsaw course

October – Tree safety survey training and introduction to woodland management.

November – Conservation tool training

December – Introduction to deer management

Core hours are 4 days per week 08.30-16.30. Some weekend and bank holiday working will also be required April to September to fit in with the current ranger working pattern.

Much of the work is of a practical, outdoor nature and any personal protective clothing needed will be provided.

Candidate must hold a full driving license.

Accommodation is available in a large 3 bedroomed cottage next to the estate yard under the terms of a volunteer occupancy agreement. The accommodation will be shared with other full time volunteers with each volunteer having their own bedroom and sharing communal areas.
