Yaáxché Conservation Trust (Yaáxché) is seeking a Development Officer Volunteer to join its team. Yaáxché is a community-oriented NGO that couples conservation with sustainable development to advance integrated landscape management in southern Belize. The focal geographic area for Ya’axché’s activities is the 770,00-acre Maya Golden Landscape (MGL) which forms part of the largest remaining contiguous areas of broadleaf forest in Central America. Within the MGL, Ya’axché directly manages 3 important protected areas and supports surrounding communities through sustainable livelihood initiatives and implementation of better land use practices.

Ya’axché, like most NGO’s, is financed mostly through grant funding. The Development Officer Volunteer contributes a critical role within the Development Team, a team that leads fundraising according to Ya’axché’s Fundraising Strategy.


  1. Implementing the organisation’s Strategic Plan and Finance Strategy
  2. Managing and maintaining donor profiles and funding history in Ya’axché’s Prospect List
  3. Prospecting and profiling new and existing donors
  4. Supporting the development and submission of proposals
  5. Enabling staff to deliver on their goals by identifying and securing funding from external sources
  6. Investigating novel financial models to support the organisations sustainable finance goals
  7. Maintaining donor relations through an up-to-date donor contact schedule
  8. Establishing good working relationships across the organisation and a strong understanding of the organisations objectives, vision and mission

Desired Qualifications and Skills

  • Environmental science or social sciences degree (or equivalent)
  • Excellent written and spoken English essential
  • Good working skills in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Experience in project development, grant writing and fundraising or interest in learning
  • Experience working with communities in developing countries or interest in experience
  • Willingness to work and learn from others from different cultures

Duration of Placement

One year full commitment with a stipend of USD 500 per month.

There are no program fees charged for this experience, but the volunteer is expected to arrange and pay for:

  • Transportation to Punta Gorda, Belize, including airfare.
  • Food, personal expenses, in-country travel, rent in Punta Gorda
  • Passport, visa, sufficient personal medical insurance
