This is ideal work experience for those wanting a career working with young people or to have a taste of what work might be like. Past volunteers have studied criminology and early intervention, teaching, community and youth work. We offer references to future employers.

As your confidence grows you can choose to lead a session if desired. You can be the positive role model and help change people's lives. Bring your creative or artistic skills in to play in these sessions.

We are looking for someone who can motivate young people; support individuals/ small groups during the delivery of sessions to improve literacy, numeracy and ICT skills as well as Art & Media and Lifelong Learning delivered by the tutor; help young people with their expectations of work, career choices and the next steps to accessing employment; support practical sessions like pyrography, photography and collage-making.

The Learning Mentor will support the Lifelong Learning Tutors to prepare young people from 16 to 19 years old to access employment, full-time education or training in Leeds by giving one to one support and encouragement to students. This role is predominantly classroom based but there may be the opportunity to support tutors on site at allotments and other outdoor venues, along with some time spent on administration. Outdoor tasks include horticultural and woodland management with learners.

Hours: 1 to 3 days per week Monday to Wednesday only (09:00am – 3:00pm)

Duration: Minimum of 10 weeks to 1 year

Location: Morley office, Leeds

Minimum Requirements for Volunteer Role: Applicants must be 21yrs+ (or 18+ if you have a mature attitude to work with young people of a similar age) and be undertaking, or hold a relevant college or university qualification and have some teaching, youth work or mentoring experience. This position will require volunteers to undergo a full CRB (now known as DBS) Clearance as it involves working with children and young people. The role also requires an advanced level of written and spoken English. 

Access: Groundwork Leeds is based in a restored mill in Morley. We have offices over 3 floors but unfortunately the building is not accessible for wheelchair users or for anyone with mobility issues. Due to the age and unique structure of the building it has been deemed that the adjustments required would be unreasonable for our organisation to undertake. Groundwork’s services are provided away from our premises, or can be reasonably arranged to be delivered at alternative sites. If you have any queries regarding access please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Key roles and responsibilities:

1. Give support to young people on expectations at work, career choices and the next steps to accessing employment through employability support sessions

2. To support individuals and small groups during the delivery of sessions to improve literacy and numeracy skills delivered by the tutor

3. To support the delivery of Arts & Media and Lifelong Learning delivered by the tutor and / or to support the delivery of practical horticultural, conservation, woodland management and landscape construction skills at off-site venues with the tutor

4. To motivate and support learners on a one to one basis with individual tasks

5. To support the tutors to ensure that accurate records, statistics, learner files and portfolios are of a required standard

6. To support the tutors with applying health and safety policies

7. To deal with learners’ needs and problems diplomatically

8. To act as a positive role model
