Forest Skills Instructor for Cusuco National Park

Operation Wallacea

Sectors: environmental education, conservation & wildlife

Closing date: Not specified, apply soon!

Operation Wallacea is a network of academics from European and North American universities who design and implement biodiversity and conservation management research programmes across 15 research sites worldwide.

We are currently recruiting a forest skills instructor to work at our terrestrial research site in Cusuco National Park, Honduras. We have one vacancy available from 9th June through to 25th July. A shorter contract may also be available starting on 9th June. Information on the Honduras forest site is available on our website.

The role will involve spending up to 6 consecutive nights staying at isolated camps within the National Park whilst supervising and teaching University volunteers and working with local guides.

The ideal candidate will have experience of working in the field, good communication and organisational skills. The main responsibility will be teaching a course on basic forest skills including practicals on fire lighting, putting up a hammock and how to use a compass. Obviously previous experience in any of these areas is beneficial but not essential. Other responsibilities include maintaining contact with Base Camp and ensuring health and safety procedures are followed at all times.

Due to the nature of the work and the isolated working conditions, the candidate must be able to speak a level of Spanish where they can communicate efficiently with local guides that they will be working with.

In return, successful applicants receive full accommodation and food onsite, networking and skills development and of course the opportunity to contribute towards long-term conservation efforts. A small flight bursary may be available for successful candidates.
