Osprey Watch Volunteer


Loch of the Lowes, Dunkeld

How many volunteers are needed?

As many as possible. We are looking to build a pool of volunteers to help provide a 24/7 watch and to provide a reserve list if spaces in the rota occur.

On what date do we want you to start?

Dates are dependent on when first osprey egg has been laid.

End Date (if applicable)

1 week after eggs have hatched

Minimum commitment we require from you (eg 1 day per week for 6 months). If any.

Minimum 1 shift of 4 hours per fortnight. You are free to choose your preferred shifts and can also opt to be ‘on call’ if a gap in the rota arises at short notice.

Objective(s) of your volunteer role

To provide support to the Species Protections Officer and Ranger during the 24/7 Osprey watch. The shifts are likely to be;

Night shift starts at 22:00 & finishes at 02:00 or 06:00 depending

Morning shifts start at 06:00 & 10:00

Afternoon shifts start at 14:00 & 18:00


  • To provide surveillance for the nesting Ospreys.
  • To observe their behaviour and movements.
  • Record details in a diary and communicate with other staff members and volunteers.
  • To speak to visitors and always be courteous and friendly.
  • To record other wildlife when observed

Description of the personal attributes/skills/qualifications required

  • Good wildlife ID skills (or a willingness to improve wildlife ID)
  • Willingness to work unsociable hours
  • Availability over the duration of the nesting season
  • Good communication skills


Full induction, on the job training and support will be provided by the Perthshire Ranger, paid seasonal osprey staff or other long term full time volunteers. Paid staff and long term volunteers will undertake the vast majority of unseasonal hours shifts.

Closing date for applications

Although there is no closing date, we hope to have volunteers in place in time for induction; however we will accept applications after the Osprey season has commenced.

Induction date for Osprey Watchers is 21st March is at 4 – 7pm.

When will interviews be held?

We will contact applicants and arrange for you to meet with the Ranger on an ongoing basis

Can SWT provide expenses e.g. for travel or branded clothing?

Branded clothing is available for you to wear during shift time. We are unable to provide any other expenses

Will you want references for volunteers before appointing or PVG disclosure?

The visitor centre is fully accessible.

Given the location of the centre and the possible unsociable hours, car ownership is important.
