Annual Electro-Fishing Intern Programme at Westcountry Rivers Trust 2018

Our internships This is the second year that the WRT rivers team is hosting summer interns to carry out electrofishing and other river and fisheries work. If you are free over the summer, and want to gain a qualification and valuable work experience in the field, then we are delighted to be able to off you our internship programme for the summer of 2018. Offer to students 

  • Up to 8 weeks of fieldwork over June/July/August/September
  • We will agree a programme where you will be carrying out electrofishing and other related activities when you commence your placement 
  • Achieve a formal qualification in Electrofishing 
  • Travel expenses (we pay mileage) 
  • 8 weeks of professionally relevant field experience in a variety of river ecological tasks
  • Opportunity to get to know and understand the work of a river and fisheries officer in the field in depth 
  • A reference from WRT
  • Opportunity to take part in consultancy work experience in addition to Trust electro-fishing 

Training in the following:

  • IFM (Institute of Fisheries Management) qualification in Electro fishing 
  • Principles of electricity in water
  • Biology of fish (reaction and targeting) 
  • Set up of electrofishing equipment to target different fish species 
  • Legislation related to fish handing
  • Obtaining permissions to remove a fish from a watercourse
  • Species identification
  • Electro-fishing methods for different situations
  • Health and Safety training for in river working, Risk Assessments, First Aid training and use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) 
  • Habitat identification  

Criteria required 

  • Be over 18, and an ecology or fisheries student/graduate at a certified HE provider, e.g. University or specialist College
  • Be physically fit to undertake the work
  • Be committed to carry out the work in a voluntary intern position (demonstrated by CV covering letter and by interview)
  • Be passionate about conservation
  • Have access to own transport (needed for areas without public transport) and that vehicle needs to be insured to use the vehicle for business use
  • Be available for electrofishing training (currently scheduled for mid-May 2018)

  Opportunities for students and HE providers 

  • A work placement for fisheries, ecology and ecological management degree and MSc courses
  • Valuable electrofishing qualification achieved, and invaluable work experience 
  • Advice and mentoring from an experienced fisheries scientist as to career development, and CV development
  • Certification in first aid and river safety awareness
  • Opportunities for other fisheries work such as fish rescues, in stream & riparian work, and fish monitoring methods may also be available to candidates
