Why we want you

If you’re a ‘people person’, with bags of enthusiasm, are approachable and have great organisational skills this could be the role for you! Join our friendly team at the RSPB South East Regional office situated in central Brighton. We’re looking to build a team of volunteers, each of whom can volunteer one day a week (or several if they chose), to ensure we have cover over a working week.

You don't need to have previous administrative or office experience but a friendly manner and a willingness to learn new skills are a must! We’d train you in everything you need to know as part of your induction.

Main tasks would include:

  • Being responsible for answering the door intercom system, meeting and greeting visitors to the office and assisting them in a professional and welcoming manner.
  • Being the first point of contact for phone calls to the office; answering and directing incoming calls. This would include providing the public with information on wildlife enquiries, volunteering, advice on planning applications and other general enquiries. This may also include, on rare occasions, complaint handling. NB. You don’t need to be a wildlife expert! We would brief you fully in everything you’d need to know, including how to handle wildlife enquiries, before starting in role.
  • Working as part of the administrative team to manage the smooth, day-to-day running of the office. This would include tasks such as dealing with incoming and outgoing post, monitoring stationery supplies and maintaining a clean and safe office environment
  • Coordination of our fleet vehicles, including arranging MOTs, services and safety checks.
  • Financial tasks such as raising invoices and processing cheques.
  • Providing any other general administrative support tasks as needed such as updating databases and meeting support.

Requirements

Essential skills:

  • Friendly and approachable manner (face to face, over the phone and in written correspondence)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Good organisational skills with attention to detail
  • Good customer service skills to include a certain amount of resilience and a calm manner if needing to deal with complaint handling (very occasionally)
  • Ability to prioritise work to achieve deadlines and multi-task
  • Capable of working independently and as part of a team
  • Willingness to learn how to work with equipment such as digital projector and video conference facilities
  • Basic IT skills (e.g. confident using Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook)

It would be desirable (but not essential) if you had basic knowledge of wildlife and previous administration experience.

What’s in it for you

The office is only a short 10 minute walk from Brighton mainline train station, so very easy to get to. You'll get to meet and volunteer with a friendly team of people who work out of this office. This is a fantastic place to learn about different roles within the RSPB and get an insight into how Europe's largest conservation charity operates.

This is a great opportunity to meet new people, staff and fellow volunteers alike, whilst making a real difference for nature! You'll have the chance to learn about different aspects of administration, receive training on wildlife enquiries and bespoke RSPB systems.

Full training will be provided for anything you don't feel confident in, as long as you have enthusiasm and a willingness to learn!

Of course we wouldn't expect you to go out of pocket so we'd reimburse your travel expenses whenever you're volunteering for us and give you ongoing support in your role.

To apply for this volunteer role, please send a CV and brief email to say why you think you'd be great for this role to Ellie Liddon (ellie.liddon@rspb.org.uk).
