Sectors: environmental education, conservation & wildlife

Closing date: Wednesday, 31 January 2018

What you'll be doing:

You’ll be welcoming people to Wanstead Flats and West Ham Park, through conversation, stories, use of props and activities. You’ll help them to explore the hidden and remarkable story of these two spaces and how beneficial they’ve been to both people and wildlife. You’ll also help people to discover wildlife where they least expect it.

Sessions take place on Wednesdays and Thursdays and Saturdays and Sundays. You can take part whenever you want. We’ll provide you with all the information and equipment you need to do this, including access to our amazing Wild East display tricycles to move around the site. We’ll encourage you to be creative and help us develop new ways of getting the importance of nature and wildlife across to families, friends and the wider community.

You can be based at either Wanstead Flats or West Ham Park, whichever is easiest for you in terms of where you live and which space you are familiar with

We are looking for people who are:

  • Friendly and outgoing.
  • Comfortable approaching or being approached by people and starting up conversation.
  • Curious about the natural world and the history of their local area.
  • Creative – able to think of ways to help people understand things more easily.
  • Community minded – keen to keep green spaces relevant to people locally
  • No prior experience or knowledge is necessary; just bring your enthusiasm, life experience and willingness to share.

What you will gain:

  • Volunteering is fun! You’ll meet new people, explore familiar places from behind the scenes, and get involved in caring for our green spaces.
  • It is a great way to try out new things, or get better at things you already do.
  • We provide opportunities to socialise, celebrate and say thank you for your contribution.
  • You’ll be outdoors getting close to nature, which is good for your health and wellbeing.
  • You’ll gain a positive understanding of your local green space and what makes it special.

We will support you by:

  • Paying reasonable travel expenses (Please note, we encourage people to volunteer locally)
  • Providing a dedicated member of staff as your point of contact from the beginning till the end of your placement
  • Giving you an induction and plan to help you to get the most out of your placement
  • Providing on-going training and informal guidance to help you get better at your role

Commitment:

All volunteers are placed for three months initially which helps managers and volunteers to get a feel for how well the role and volunteer are matched.

For this role we suggest being able to attend a minimum of 2 days per month.
