Commitment: Flexible; ideally 1–2 days per week during school terms.
Overview:
We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join our education team at Cuerden Valley Park to help deliver engaging and interactive river studies sessions for local primary schools. We are the only site in the Lancashire that can offer on-site river studies sessions; with the River Lostock running directly through the park. Last year, we hosted 1200 schoolchildren from 54 schools across the North West & are looking for more volunteers to keep up with demand.
This is a fantastic opportunity to inspire the next generation about the importance of rivers, ecosystems, and conservation while supporting the park's mission to connect people with nature. Previous teaching experience is not required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with educational sessions on river studies tailored for primary school children.
- Guide pupils in hands-on activities, including:

- Measuring river flow and depth.
- Identifying river features like meanders and floodplains.
- Exploring aquatic habitats and identifying wildlife (e.g., invertebrates, fish).
- Ensure the safety and supervision of children during fieldwork.
- Set up, pack away, and maintain equipment used in river studies.
Skills and Experience:
- Passion for nature, rivers, and the environment.
- Enjoyment of working with children and sharing knowledge in an engaging way.
- Good communication skills to explain concepts and activities clearly.
- Basic knowledge of rivers, ecosystems, and wildlife is beneficial (training provided).
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- A willingness to learn and work as part of a friendly team.

Requirements:
- Volunteers must be 18 years or older.
- A DBS check will be required (arranged by the park).
- Appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear for fieldwork activities.
- Availability on Monday, Wednesday & Thursdays - 9:00 till 15:00
