When mid- April-mid/late July

Commitment Minimum 12 weeks

Why We Want You:

Bempton Cliffs is at the heart of Britain's largest mainland seabird colony. During the height of the season nearly 500,000 seabirds can be found between Flamborough, Bempton and Filey which presents a stunning spectacle on the towering chalk cliffs and up to 20 kilometres of coastline. We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed residential volunteer to help deliver a comprehensive programme of seabird monitoring and research at this internationally important site. You will monitor many species from gannets to guillemots, recording breeding productivity and colony size.

What’s In It For You:

If you're looking for a way to build on your experience in research and monitoring then this is the role for you. You'll gain excellent experience in different survey techniques, data management and analysis, contribute to the annual monitoring report as well as seeing how an RSPB reserve is run from behind the scenes.

During your stay you will become a full member of the reserve team. You'll be contributing to vital research and helping towards saving our threatened seabirds. Accommodation (including utility bills) is provided in the small village of Bempton, one mile from the reserve.

Requirements:

This role requires enthusiasm and dedication as you'll be required for a minimum of 12 weeks. You'll need to be as happy working as part of a team as you are spending hours alone monitoring on the cliffs, and your monitoring and survey skills will need to be good. You'll also be able to tell your kittiwakes from your herring gulls, and be happy to engage with members of the public. A full driving license is necessary for this role, as is the ability to work outside in all weathers. Bempton is often described as 'bracing' so if you like fresh air, this is the place to come!

Notes:

Appropriate training will be provided and pre-agreed expenses will be re-imbursed where necessary.

Closing date for applications Friday 28th February

About RSPB

The RSPB is a charity for the conservation of birds and nature. We bring people together who love birds and other wildlife, and who want to take action to restore the health and diversity of the natural world. We carry out conservation on a large scale, protect and restore habitats, and save species from extinction. We’re living in a nature and climate emergency, and we won’t stop whilst the threats persist. We believe our work makes a real difference to the world we live in. It takes a great team to save nature and we need a wide range of skills to make it happen. As an RSPB employee, you will be helping to save nature every time you come to work. There’s never been a more important time to protect our wildlife and wild places, so we want to make sure you feel rewarded for everything you help us to achieve.
