Conservation & Wildlife

We are looking for volunteers to join us next summer. Our volunteer teams maintain hiking trails and work on practical nature conservation tasks in Thórsmörk, a remote mountain area in South Iceland. Though focused on trail construction, our practical work also includes landscape restoration (erosion control) and tree planting. Our volunteer teams bring their own tents and we stay at base camps close to the mountain trails.

We will host 3 and 4-week placements as well as longer placements (9 weeks) for team leaders.

We are looking for participants who have some experience of camping and hill walking, enjoy wilderness landscapes and are ready for a challenge. Iceland’s notoriously changeable weather means that our teams have to be well prepared with warm clothing, good waterproofs and sturdy tents. Due to the strenuous nature of our work, participants must be physically fit and as many of our work sites are in remote locations, we do a lot of hiking to get to them!

Our international volunteer teams include volunteers from all over the world and the working language on the programme is English. Participants must be 20+ years of age. Participants organise and pay their own travel to and from the meeting point in Thórsmörk and are also responsible for organising their own travel insurance. Once volunteers have joined the programme, food and campsites are provided throughout the placements (including weekends). There is no participation fee.

About Thórsmörk Trail Volunteer Programme (Land and Forest Iceland / Land og Skógur)

The Thórsmörk trail volunteer programme (Trailteam.is) was established in 2012 and is managed by Land and Forest Iceland (Land og Skógur). Its main role is to assist with the maintenance of the hiking trails in Thórsmörk and Goðaland though our teams are involved in a variety of practical nature conservation tasks throughout the area.
