Trainee Warden
Flat Holm Project
This is an exceptional opportunity to work on a unique SSSI and local Nature Reserve, situated 5 miles off the coast of Cardiff.
We are looking for committed volunteers to become part of a small, close-knit team and assist with all aspects of day to day management of the Island.
Volunteers need to commit for 6 months+ starting anytime from January.
Duties include:
- Habitat management (inc. vegetation management, coppicing, footpath maintenance, step construction, dry stone walling, livestock husbandry and tractor driving).
- Building maintenance (inc. painting, repairing fences and gates, rendering, and system checks).
- Biological monitoring according to season (inc. bird, rocky shore line, insect, slow worm, butterfly and plants).
- Visitor management March – October (inc. meet and greet, tour guide, preparation of pub and shop).
- Assisting with residential groups March – October (inc. preparing dormitories, making beds, cleaning, educational activities).
All volunteers live and work on the island in basic shared accommodation and are required to make their own arrangements during any period when volunteers request to be off island with prior agreement.
Food (when on the island), a travel expense allowance and on the job training will be provided. For those who commit to 6 months, we offer LANTRA Brushcutter and First aid training.
Previous trainee wardens have had great success in attaining paid employment within the environmental sector following their volunteering on Flat Holm.
Desired skills:
- Ability to undertake practical maintenance tasks.
- Desire to pursue a career in conservation or heritage.
- Experience in using tools.
- Enjoy working with visitors.
- A minimum commitment of 6 months minimum is required.
Applicants should be enthusiastic, hard working, possess strong social skills and be able to work in all weather conditions.
They must also be prepared to attend an informal interview on TEAMS, and/or an overnight on island interview.
