Direct Ecology Ltd was established in 2008 and is a leading small Scottish ecological consultancy based in Dunblane with a team of 12 ecologists with associated seasonal and office staff. We have a wide client base and have developed an excellent reputation for delivering objective, high quality work to clients in the public, private and voluntary sectors. Our main areas of work are in habitat, bird and protected species survey (including bats), undertaking and overseeing licensed works, providing Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) services and BREEAM assessments. We work on a wide range of projects from large scale road, powerline and mineral projects to smaller scale building and steading developments.

The role

Due to continued success and growth, we are looking for an experienced senior/principal ecologist to join our current team who will become a key part of the company over the coming years. This is an exciting opportunity to take on a lead role in managing projects and staff and helping to develop the Company. It is anticipated that the role will involve the following:

Management – manage a wide variety of projects including project planning and financial management. Some staff management.

Communication – communicate effectively with clients, staff and the Company Director

Reporting- take a lead role in writing and editing reports including Preliminary Ecological Assessments, Ecological Impact Assessments, Ornithological Impact Assessments, BREEAM reports, Species specific reports, ECoW reports.

Tenders – take a lead role in drafting and checking tender documents

GIS (ArcGIS and QGIS) – assist with GIS work when required including data management and checking

Fieldwork – undertake fieldwork including extended Phase 1 habitat surveys and protected species survey. 

ECoW: undertake ECoW services on a range of sites.

Health and Safety: preparing and checking HASPs, assisting with health and safety management of staff.


  • Relevant degree and/or post graduate qualification
  • Full or Chartered member of CIEEM (or eligible)
  • At least five years relevant experience in the ecological consultancy industry (ideally in Scotland)
  • You must have good knowledge of current wildlife legislation, the planning system, Scottish SNH licensing system and ecological BREEAM assessments.
  • You must have excellent communication skills including report writing and editing skills
  • Be an all round ecologist including be a competent field surveyor and having experience in Phase 1 habitat survey, bird survey, bat and protected species survey.
  • Have experience of undertaking ECoW work
  • A full driving licence.
