About the role

If you're a motivated and experienced commercial property solicitor seeking a challenging, rewarding and varied role, apply now to join our dynamic team at Sustrans.

You’ll be the expert advising our Estates team and wider colleagues on issues relating to our diverse land interests across the National Cycle Network (NCN), cycle paths, old railway paths, agricultural lands, and mixed-use properties. You’ll also work with our Contracts Officer to identify risks in contracts where we’re commissioned to deliver new projects. Your role will influence our Asset strategy, inform key decisions on which work projects we take on and enable colleagues to understand legal implications and proceed with confidence.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Advising and providing conveyancing services to enable land, or rights over land, to be divested or acquired, in England and Wales
  • Advising colleagues on contracts where we are being commissioned or funded to undertake new projects
  • Acting as a sounding board to non-lawyers in Sustrans who regularly review contracts (eg our Contracts Officer and Head of Construction)

We offer true hybrid working, a flexible mix of working from home and occasional travel to a nearby office hub.

Requirements:

  • Experienced commercial property solicitor with a strong understanding of commercial property transactions including acquisition and sale of land and interests over land.
  • Experience of providing advice on and drafting amendments to commercial contracts
  • Ability to provide pragmatic advice and communicate effectively with stakeholders of varying legal knowledge.
  • Strong drafting, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and without supervision.
  • Experience in supervising or supporting junior lawyers and non-legally qualified contractors is advantageous.

Sustrans has a long-term commitment to being a charity for everyone - reducing inequality, valuing diversity, enabling inclusion and ensuring all people are treated with dignity and respect. We aim to be a truly inclusive employer and actively welcome applications from people from all parts of the community, in particular from under-represented groups.
