Do you want to be a part of an exciting project that connects people with wildlife and the coast?
Bird Wise East Kent (a partnership
between Thanet District Council and Canterbury City Council) are looking for an enthusiastic,
motivated person who would like to teach the public about how to share the beaches with the
wildlife, so that both can enjoy the diverse coastline between Whitstable and Pegwell Bay. This
area is busy and enjoyed by different groups of people who access the coast for various
reasons, such as dog walking, kite surfing, relaxing and walking. You will need good diplomacy
and negotiation skills in order to navigate conversations with various groups of
people.
The Engagement Officer will be supported by the SAMMS (Strategic Access Monitoring and
Management Scheme) officer to carry out the Bird Wise East Kent project plan. The Bird Wise
East Kent team will work together to carry out engagement events and activities and coordinate
and develop volunteers and there will also be occasions where you will work on your
own.
We are recruiting an engagement officer who will use their excellent communication
skills to educate the public about the protected coastal area and protected coastal birds that
need to be able to feed on these beaches during September-May in order to refuel before they
migrate back to the Arctic in the spring. The role will require carrying out education
programmes in schools and being able to share knowledge and enthusiasm with children.
A level three qualification in a relevant subject such as, environmental studies,
animal behaviour or an equivalent, and a full UK driving licence is essential. As is knowledge
of general wildlife and managing social media and/or websites. It is desirable that applicants
have skills in writing reports, preparing promotional materials and talks and some knowledge of
coastal processes.
