Your new role
As a Senior Environmental Advisor you will act as a source of environmental expertise leading on the delivery of better environmental outcomes across the business.
Working at a national level, you will primarily provide specialist environmental advice to Major Projects and Operations Directorates to support delivery of an ambitious programme of National Highways’ asset maintenance and development.
You will be responsible for providing advice across a broad range of environmental areas including: environmental impact assessment (all topics), appraisal, design, mitigation and supporting projects through the planning process.
What you’ll be leading on
- Provide accurate, practical and timely specialist advice (including reviews and technical assurance) to National Highways, with a particular focus on supporting delivery of our Major Project’s programme of works.
- Act as a source of subject matter expertise to provide advice and guidance to National Highways’ contractors and suppliers, with a focus on assuring that environmental work is fit for purpose and fulfils Design Manual for Roads And Bridges (DMRB) requirements.
- Internal and external stakeholder engagement to promote and gain commitment to delivering better environmental outcomes.
- Freedom to make day-to-day tactical decisions with supervision from the Principal Environmental Advisor & Team Leader. Recognise major issues and escalate accordingly.
To be successful
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences often with differing points of view.
- Ability to collaborate with others to set standards and implement best practices, whilst dealing constructively with setbacks.
- Full membership, or working towards, a relevant professional institution, and/or relevant qualifications and evidence of professional development.
- Specialist knowledge and experience of environmental impact assessment, appraisal and/or environmental management.
- Ability to deliver better environmental outcomes on complex development projects through collaboration with project delivery teams.
- Ability to use a combination of general and specialist environmental knowledge to optimise the solutions to complex environmental issues involving significant levels of risk.
Environmental Sustainability Division
National Highways connects the country, but it is important that it does that in an environmentally sustainable way. There is clear direction from Government to move faster and be more ambitious regarding the environment, seeking not just to minimise environmental impact but actively enhance the environment. This is supported by stakeholder and public opinion. Delivering on the Company’s Net Zero carbon commitments, enhancing biodiversity and minimising the impact on communities and environmental receptors close to our network are key to successful delivery of our current investment plan (RIS2), and the development of future investment plans.
The Environmental Sustainability Division was established in January 2022, and will grow to be about 50 people strong. The increase in size and seniority of the posts in the team reflecting the centrality of the environment to National Highways. The team will develop standards, provide advice, and assure environmental work across the Company. The team will also be an integral part of developing future strategy for the Company.
