North England Forest District has a complement of 132 staff who care for 61,000 hectares of forest and 25,000 hectares of open land. Annual timber production is 550,000 m3 and there is a planting programme in excess of 3 million trees a year. The District has 45 SSSIs totalling over 10,000 ha and is a major contributor to local and national biodiversity. The District has four visitor centres at, Grizedale, Hamsterley, Kielder and Whinlatter. The nations forests in the North of England attract over one million visits per annum.

Kielder Forest is the largest forest in England, with its 65,000 hectares home to one of the most popular outdoor recreation sites in the region. Kielder Water & Forest Park attracts upwards of 500,000 visitors a year and is home to the largest colony of ospreys in the UK, the largest population of red squirrels in England as well as many nationally important ecological sites and rare habitats for wildlife.

There is a year-round vibrant events programme of sports, wildlife, motorsports and arts activities. The forest’s Lakeside Way is one of England’s most impressive pieces of recreational infrastructure, circling Kielder Water with 26 miles of multi-user trail. The park hosts the largest mountain bike trails network in a single location in the UK, with blue to black trail grades, as well as many walking and horse riding routes and a 12 mile long forest drive.

We work closely in partnership with neighbouring landowners Northumbrian Water Limited and other operators and stakeholders in the area through the Kielder Water & Forest Park Development Trust.

Kielder Castle is the primary visitor welcome point, café and event space managed by Forestry England. The day visitor offer is soon to be redeveloped to meet modern visitor expectations. Also on site is Kielder Cycle Centre, offering cycle retail and a large bike fleet for hire, including electric assist cycles.

Kielder Forest is at the heart of the Northumberland International Dark Skies Park, designated in 2013. Kielder Observatory is located four miles from Kielder Castle and is an award-winning attraction.
