Rangers play a hugely important role at the National Trust, thinking long term to look after our special places. We’re looking for strategic leader to set the direction for the future of our outstanding Grade 1 listed Parkland at Kedleston.

Key projects your team will deliver include our HSL funded Woodland Management scheme, hedgerow planting, management of new wildflower meadows and work to protect our White-clawed Crayfish. 

What it's like to work here

With a team of 3 dedicated and enthusiastic Rangers, and an Outdoors Project Officer, you’ll continue to improve the biodiversity of this special site while also welcoming over 220,000 visits each year.

With over 800 acres of woodland and wood pasture, Kedleston Park is a green lung on the urban fringe of Derby. An 18th Century naturalistic landscape, with a treasure trove of Veteran trees and designed views. Kedleston is a wildlife haven and Site of Special Scientific Interest providing a home to White-clawed Crayfish, Red Kites, Otters and rare invertebrates.

What you'll be doing

You’ll set the vision and direction for Kedleston’s Parkland with the support of specialist advice from our internal consultancy. You’ll empower your team to be their best, working together to deliver benefits for people and nature. You’ll be an active member of Kedleston’s Senior Leadership Team supporting the General Manager in developing and delivering our property business plan.

Central to the role will be your ability to balance both the demands of managing and developing our Parkland and portfolio sites, with the demands of a busy, high profile visitor environment.

Who we're looking for

You'll need to have/be:

  • Strong leadership skills and experience, managing a team of paid staff and volunteers
  • Strong countryside management experience and a good understanding of conservation principles and access management
  • Knowledge of SSI designations, environmental land management schemes and key stakeholders
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to engage with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Strong organisational skills including time and resource management and confidences in managing budgets, finances, and contracts
  • Good knowledge of health and safety requirements
  • Enthusiastic, knowledgeable, great with people and comfortable working with people of all ages and backgrounds
  • Hands-on approach, leading by example to deliver exceptional visitor experiences every day while maintaining conservation at the heart of all we do
