Biodiversity Crisis Habitat Surveyors

Ref: WYJS: 35-22

Salary: WY04 (indicative) £20,444 to £22,129 (FTE)

Temporary contract - 3 months

West Yorkshire Ecology is seeking two full-time Biodiversity Crisis Habitat Surveyors to work in the field in Calderdale.

The successful applicant will be expected to undertake broad area habitat surveys to UKHab standard in the upper valleys of the River Calder. Additional species information will be collected largely as botanical target notes, survey coverage and target areas for follow-up specialist detailed surveys. The results will be used to feed into Biodiversity Crisis action planning and the Local Nature Recovery Strategy.

Applicants must have experience of undertaking broad area habitat surveys and botanical recording, ideally in upland acid environments using tablet computers. The ability to recognise important habitat areas requiring more detailed follow-up surveys by experienced specialists is important. There will be a need to work as part of a small team coordinating transport and sharing skills with other members of the team.

West Yorkshire Ecology Service (WYES) is the ecological records and information service for West Yorkshire and provides advice on nature conservation, biodiversity and other ecological matters. The post is supported by Calderdale District Council and forms the start of its response to the declared Biodiversity Crisis. The area covers a diverse range of acid to neutral habitats in the South Pennines National Character Area skirting the South Pennine Moors SSSI / SAC / SPA. Some of the grassland support populations of waxcap fungi of national and international importance.

It is expected that this project will be run again for 5 months in 2023 and 2024.

For an informal discussion please contact Robert Masheder on 07917598512 or Fiona Denham 07931533369.

Closing date for applications: Friday 01/07/2022 at 13:00.

Interviews are expected to be in the following week.
