About the role
An exciting opportunity has arisen to influence a more sustainable and active approach to travel for both workers and tourists who visit some of Scotland’s most famous historical sites.
Working as an Embedded Officer within Historic Environment Scotland (HES), you will be integral to developing the approach to sustainable and active travel at HES, including revising the existing HES Business Travel Policy into a Sustainable Travel Policy expanded to include visitor travel.
You will support strategic work currently being undertaken in our Responsible Tourism Strategy, Properties in Care Sustainable Strategy Project and the Carbon Management Plan. You will also help embed sustainable travel as a core element of the Sustainable Management Plans for key sites, including Holyrood Park and Edinburgh Castle.
As an embedded officer in HES, you will work within the Net Zero team, receiving administrative support associated with them, as well as the wider Technical Research and Science Team. In addition to this, you will work across HES departments and interact with colleagues across the organisation as required.
You will act as a focal point for HES to improve their community engagement and partnership working, in order to enhance their active travel offering, and create joined up travel networks.
In addition to this, you will lead on the collaborative creation of a sustainable travel toolkit for different types of sites, responding to specific opportunities and challenges.
This role will require travel and work at locations as necessary to undertake projects on behalf of Sustrans and HES. The successful candidate will have to travel on occasion to Edinburgh. Flexible hybrid working is available part of the time as per HES Hybrid working policy.
About you
Skilled in communicating with a diverse range of people, you will build relationships easily; and, using your influencing ability, ensure the prioritisation of sustainable travel improvements at HES sites.
We will look for evidence of your experience in developing and implementing strategies, policies and plans and you will have experience in one of the following areas: transport planning/ sustainable transport/ active travel.
A knowledge of built environments, ideally historic built environments, and their impact on participation in active travel would be advantageous, to help you advocate for sustainable transport and better places across the region.
You will be able to conduct qualitative and quantitative analysis and should be able to interpret information to advise colleagues at a strategic level.
