Get to the heart of the UK’s biggest issues

As the UK’s regulator for the energy industry, Ofgem works on behalf of energy consumers to ensure that every household and business in the UK can rely on a safe, affordable, and environmentally sustainable energy supply. Now that record increases and volatility in global gas prices have put the energy market under severe strain, we need to go further and faster in pursuing the country’s climate goals and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.

As an Assistant Policy Manager, you’ll help us do more for people and the planet. You’ll support the management of key workstreams and projects, including internal and external stakeholder engagement. You’ll support the drafting of clear and concise documents – including briefings, policy documents, guidance, consultations, decision letters, and impact assessments. Using your honed analytical skills, you’ll perform high quality, timely and robust analysis of policy options, making evidence-based recommendations and solving problems as they arise.

A natural communicator, you’ll work collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders across all levels of the organisation and beyond. You’ll have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to effectively communicate complex issues to non-expert audiences. Ideally, you’ll have good knowledge of the energy sector, and a demonstratable understanding of Ofgem and the consumer needs it serves. You’ll have excellent organisational and prioritisation skills, and the ability to manage your own workload.

On a personal level, you’ll be an effective decision maker capable of delivering at pace and seeing the bigger picture. You’ll be committed to your own personal development, and to the development of those around you. Most importantly, you’ll be a true team player passionate about providing the highest quality service to customers and consumers across the UK. The work we do is at the forefront of the UK’s most pressing social, environmental, and political issues, and so you’ll have the ability to work with sensitivity and understand diverse perspectives.

If successful in your application, you’ll initially be deployed to either the Heat Networks, Code Governance Reform, Industry Codes, or Policy and Scheme Development Teams within the Enforcement & Emerging Issues Directorate or Delivery & Schemes Directorate.

We welcome candidates from all backgrounds, and especially those from underrepresented groups. While this is a full-time role, flexible working patterns and job shares are welcome. We will also support you with excellent training and development opportunities, plus a competitive benefits package.

We are running a Virtual Recruitment Event to give candidates the opportunity to learn more about working for Ofgem and discuss the roles we have available in more detail.
