Are you looking for an opportunity to work with government policy makers on matters related to farming and the environment?

About the role

This is an important time to be working in agriculture. In this exciting national role, you will protect and further members' interests by developing policies that are sympathetic to and deliver better outcomes for agriculture and the environment.

Working alongside national colleagues in our Water Unit, your input will make a key contribution to our important water quality policy work.

You will prepare NFU responses to policy and legislative proposals, your keen eye for detail and ability to take complex issues and turn them into policy success will set you apart from others.

To achieve this, you will represent the NFU in discussions and negotiations with government and external stakeholders and take responsibility for briefing our policy team, the NFU’s Environment Forum and Officeholders.

About you

We are looking for an enthusiastic person with a background in environmental or agricultural policy. Ideally, you will have a degree in agriculture, geography or environmental science, have an understanding of the farming industry and associated environmental agenda and have experience of working with a client group or farmers.

You have strong influencing skills, are driven and have a sense of urgency to get things done. You like variety and are energetic in your work approach, and you are keen to develop yourself.

You will maintain relationships with key stakeholders on water and air quality policy. Achieving positive outcomes in discussions and negotiations, whilst maintaining good working relationships is an important aspect of this role.

This role will provide skilled professional guidance and technical support. You will also need to be able to synthesise and communicate technical and complex information, sometimes on politically sensitive or emotionally charged issues and ideal candidate will need to demonstrate good communication skills at all levels.

We are proud to make a difference. Working for the NFU means working alongside great people who are committed to their work and recognised for their knowledge and expertise. Please see our careers page for more information.

Why join our team?

You will become part of our friendly, dedicated working environment and work with a highly motivated team, recognised for their knowledge and expertise and passion about food and farming. In addition to this we also offer, 25 days annual leave (plus, statutory bank holidays), increasing with length of service, company car provision and an attractive contributory, stakeholder pension scheme.

We are currently piloting a ‘hybrid working’ scheme that gives colleagues the choice of working from home for up to 3 days a week, with other working days being from the office in Stoneleigh, HQ, or out and about with our members.

We recognise that some applicants may wish to work flexibly, and we welcome discussions regarding this. Please discuss this with us as part of the recruitment process.
