Soil Association is the charity that digs deeper to transform the way we eat, farm and care for our natural world. We do this to support a future with good health, in balance with nature, and a safe climate. We build real solutions from the ground up. For the last 75 years, we've worked with citizens, farmers, policy makers and businesses, supporting them to explore the vital relationship between the health of soil, plants, animals, and people. Because the only way to solve the issues we face is to understand that they are all connected - and that food, farming and forestry are a crucial part of the solution.

We are now seeking to appoint a new Associate Director of Farming & Land Use. You will be the lead specialist in farming and land use within the Soil Association – a high profile, visible role where you will have a platform to advocate for, and advise on, UK-wide approaches nature-friendly farming, land management and forestry. Reporting to our Programme Director as a member of the Charity Leadership Team, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Ensuring the impact of the Soil Association’s work on farming and land use in contributing towards our mission and strategy.
  • Leading a cross functional team that delivers our work on farming and land use to support a UK-wide transition to nature friendly farming, land management and forestry.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, funders, and partners to coordinate efforts, develop mutually beneficial partnerships and deliver greater impact.
  • Developing and delivering appropriate earned income work on farming and land use, with a strong emphasis on insight, innovation, and impact opportunities.
  • Overseeing how we evidence the impact of our work, ensuring that our evidence base is accurate, relevant, compelling, and continually developing.
  • Raising and maintaining the profile of SA’s farming and land use work by acting as an ambassador and spokesperson for the organisation.
  • Working closely with the Policy Team to contribute to policy environments locally, nationally, and internationally which support the transition to nature-friendly farming, land management and forestry.

To succeed, you will need a wide understanding of UK agriculture, including organic, with a good network of contacts across the industry. You will have the ability to represent the Soil Association at a senior level externally, championing our approach to nature-friendly methods of farming and land use. You should have good people, programme, and service management experience, in a context where products, services or programmes are delivered to customers and/or for beneficiaries. You will need experience of operating at a senior level within organisations, a deep commitment to our values and mission, and be passionate about the difference we can make.

In return we offer an exciting and challenging role with a great platform for you to make an impact on farming and land use systems at a national level.
