Job purpose and background

An essential component of CDP’s recently released strategy to 2025 is to tackle deforestation and drive nature-positive outcomes through environmental disclosure and we are looking for the right individual to join our team to support this vision..

As our ‘Technical Manager, Forest and Land Use’ you will have the technical, scientific and analytical expertise to evolve the CDP Forest questionnaire content, reporting guidance and scoring methodology using best-practice standards and scientific benchmarks to measure companies’ progress against what needs to happen to ensure a transition towards a restorative economy. This is an exciting opportunity for a research-focused individual with experience in corporate sustainability and land use change to play a critical role in catalysing transformation within the corporate sector. About the Questionnaire and Scoring Evolution (QSE) – ESG Disclosure Content Team

The QSE team is responsible for the development of CDP’s questionnaires, reporting guidance and scoring methodology materials which provide environmental information to investors, customers and other data-users, and drive companies’ actions to catalyse the transition to a sustainable economy. .

Key responsibilities

To develop the CDP corporate Forests questionnaire and reporting guidance content, and support colleagues across other environmental themes, such as climate change and water security. This includes:

  • Collaborating with the CDP’s Disclosure Content teams, Environmental Practices teams and Cities, States & Regions teams to explore and identify key areas and priorities that will be incorporated into future CDP Forests disclosure, in line with CDP’s 2025 strategy.
  • Analysing, and mapping CDP's questionnaire content to other key external frameworks, such as the CGF Forest Positive Coalition
  • Conducting desk-based research into corporate actions and risks and prioritizing data points essential for assessing companies’ action on deforestation and land use.
  • Convening and managing technical working groups with key external and internal subject matters experts to collect insights for and feedback on potential developments to questionnaire content.
  • Providing subject matter expertise and analytical support across CDP’s broader activities related to forests & land-use and other environmental themes, including: contributing to projects (e.g., funded projects, publications, engagement events etc.).supporting other teams within CDP to deliver CDP’s annual reporting cycle.
  • Building and maintaining technical external relationships (with advisory panels, reporting standards etc.) and representing CDP externally as a forests or land-use expert.

The precise description and nature of your job may vary from time to time, and you may be required to carry out other duties as necessary to meet business needs.

Required skills and experience:

  • A degree level qualification in environmental science, engineering or sustainability related discipline.
  • At least three years of demonstrable experience (academic and/or professional) in a forests or land-use related role.
  • Familiarity with corporate disclosure standards and initiatives (e.g., The Accountability Framework, CGF Forest Positive Coalition, GRI, TNFD).
  • Previous experience of researching and producing written outputs to an excellent standard (preferably for a corporate audience) and with a proven ability to pay attention to detail.
  • At least three years of demonstrable experience managing projects.
  • Evidence of qualitative and quantitative data analysis skills, and advanced Microsoft office skills, in particular Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Strong communication skills, including a high standard of written English and the ability to present complex information in a simple and concise way;
  • The ability to work effectively and efficiently with team members of different technical and cultural backgrounds.

Desired skills and experience

  • Familiarity with CDP’s corporate disclosure framework.
  • Work experience within corporates, ideally supporting with sustainability performance or reporting
  • Demonstrable expertise in one or more of the following: the drivers of deforestation, commodity supply chains (including beef, soy, timber, pulp & paper, and palm oil), key geographies (Indonesia, Latin America), sustainability
  • MSc degree preferred specializing in deforestation and relating to economic or business value chains.

Role details

This is a full-time fixed term role for 24 months, with a possibility of renewal. The role will be based at CDP’s London office with options for remote/hybrid working and will report to the Senior Manager, Questionnaire & Scoring Evolution.

What we offer

Salary and benefits: £37,600-£39,000 with annual discretionary bonus (depending on organization performance), 30 days’ holiday plus bank holidays, generous non-contributory pension provision, life assurance, flexible working opportunities, and other benefits. There is a 6-month probationary period for this role.
