Job Purpose and Background

An essential component of CDP’s recently released strategy to 2025 is to drive corporate action on plastics pollution through environmental disclosure, and we are looking for the right individual to join our team to support this vision.

As our new ‘Technical Manager, Plastics’ you will have the technical, scientific and analytical expertise to create Plastics questionnaire content and reporting guidance using best-practice standards and scientific benchmarks to drive positive action by the private sector, capital markets and cities to eliminate plastics pollution. This is an exciting opportunity for a research-focused individual with experience in corporate sustainability performance to develop your knowledge of CDP disclosure and the subject matter expertise that supports it.

About the Questionnaire and Scoring Evolution (QSE) – ESG Disclosure Content Team

The Disclosure Content teams are responsible for the development of CDP’s questionnaires, reporting guidance and scoring methodology materials which provide environmental information to investors, customers and other data-users, and drive companies’ actions to catalyse the transition to a sustainable economy.

Key responsibilities

To develop CDP’s approach to the disclosure of information related to plastics production and use and support colleagues across other environmental areas, such as climate change, forests and water security. This includes:

  • Analyzing and mapping relevant frameworks, standards and initiatives to CDP’s disclosure framework.
  • Conducting desk-based research into emerging and key plastic-related issues.
  • Ensuring that the new plastics questionnaire content and reporting guidance requests relevant information to drive action on plastics within corporates, is aligned with CDP’s disclosure principles as well as existing thematic strategies, data products and initiatives.
  • Building and maintaining technical external relationships (with advisory panels, reporting standards etc.) and representing CDP externally as a plastics expert.Working in collaboration with the Environmental Practice teams to enhance CDP’s strategy for action on plastics and support its implementation.
  • Providing subject matter expertise and analytical support across CDP’s broader activities related to plastics and other environmental themes, including: contributing to projects (e.g., funded projects, publications, engagement events etc.).supporting other teams within CDP to deliver CDP’s annual reporting cycle, reviewing emerging frameworks and contributing/coordinating responses to external consultations.

The precise description and nature of your job may vary from time to time, and you may be required to carry out other duties as necessary to meet business needs.

Required skills and experience:

  • A degree level qualification in environmental science, engineering or sustainability related discipline (MSc degree preferred), ideally specializing in plastics/corporate sustainability/circular economy.
  • At least three years of demonstrable experience (academic and/or professional) in a sustainability related role - ideally in industrial firms, financial institutions or policy bodies related to plastics issues. 
  • Familiarity with corporate disclosure standards and initiatives relating to sustainability (e.g., CDP, GRI, TCFD, CEO Water Mandate, EMF).
  • Previous experience of researching and producing written outputs to an excellent standard (preferably for a corporate audience) and with a proven ability to pay attention to detail.
  • At least three years of demonstrable experience managing projects.
  • Evidence of qualitative and quantitative data analysis skills, and advanced Microsoft office skills, in particular Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Strong communication skills, including a high standard of written English and the ability to present complex information in a simple and concise way;

Desired skills and experience

  • Familiarity with CDP’s corporate disclosure framework.
  • Work experience ideally from within, or supporting corporates within a sector with high plastics use or production e.g Food, Beverage & Tobacco, Manufacturing.

Role details

This is a fixed term role for 12 months with possibility of renewal. The role will be based at CDP’s London office with options for remote/hybrid working and will report to the Senior Manager, Questionnaire & Scoring Evolution.

What we offer

Salary and benefits: £37,600-£39,000 with annual discretionary bonus (depending on organization performance), 30 days’ holiday plus bank holidays, generous non-contributory pension provision, life assurance, flexible working opportunities, and other benefits. There is a 3-month probationary period for this role.
