About us

Treeconomics is a UK-based social enterprise, which works with local authorities, academics and private businesses, to promote sustainable treescapes in our towns and cities. We also work with research organisations and collaborate with partners in the both the US and Europe.

Through our work, we are able to communicate the value that trees bring to society through the ecosystem services and amenity values that they provide. We do this because we want to see well-managed trees in an expansive urban forest, that will benefit people living and working in our towns and cities.

We aim to demonstrate that trees are part of the solution for many of our urban problems (be that crime, air pollution, flooding, etc). Our urban forests are the frontline defence against climate change and the importance of trees in our towns and cities has never been greater.

We are a friendly team and our working environment is one of mutual support and encouragement.

As an organisation, we value diversity, equality and inclusion, and welcome applications from everyone. We encourage our staff to bring their whole selves to work, as authenticity makes our team strong.

About the role

The role will primarily involve carrying out desktop-based tree valuation surveys within a project team, occasionally supporting the work of field teams and volunteers. The projects we complete take place across the UK and Europe, so there will be a wide variety of project types and customers to work with.

As a technician, you will assist the team with report writing, data analysis using Excel and Numbers, GIS and fieldwork. You will also be required to oversee our interns, to ensure they are instructed with work and are able to carry out their tasks.

You will work alongside our Urban Forest Consultants and will be required to organise your workload with them.

Your work will be varied, as projects are shaped and delivered to meet the needs of individual clients, thus no two projects will be the same.

About you

You will need to have an interest in the environment, and a degree (or equivalent) in either geography or another environmental discipline.

The role is primarily desk based, performing data analysis and writing reports. Skills in these areas are therefore important. Of particular importance is a sound understanding of spreadsheet functions, managing large datasets, the use of functions including macros, and the production of output charts and tables. Additionally, aspects of GIS will be utilised in the role, so experience of this (perhaps as part of your degree) will be real plus. There will be some aspects of fieldwork to this role and willingness to take part in this will be important.

The role is varied, and therefore you will need to be flexible and adaptable. The role revolves around the communication of the values of urban trees to the public and other stakeholders, so good written and spoken communication skills are essential.

You may be required to assist with training to small groups, from time to time, so you will need to be comfortable presenting.

You will work comfortably as part of a team, and help to mentor interns as they learn about the work we do.
