Location: Mainly home-based with some days in our office in Bristol and an occasional visit to Fir Farm, Lower Swell Glos.

Period: 3 months

Hours: 5 days per week

Level: Internship

Pay: £350 per week

We are seeking a highly motivated and capable intern to support our work over the next three months. The role will span a range of tasks including communications, research, projects, campaigns, events and admin.

You will be managed by Megan Perry, Head of Communications at the Sustainable Food Trust. The role will consist of three days per week for Sustainable Food Trust core work, plus two days per week supporting projects at Fir Farm in the Cotswolds. Fir Farm is owned by Lady Parker, a member of the SFT Board who has pioneered a mobile abattoir project and played a leading role in our campaign for local abattoirs. Fir Farm will also be showcasing our Global Farm Metric, measuring the sustainability of their farm and presenting this in a report, as well as hosting events over the next few months.

Key Responsibilities will include:

  • Support for projects which may include measuring and valuing sustainability, local food and local abattoirs, the role of grazing livestock in sustainable food systems, sustainable and healthy diets and pesticides in agriculture.
  • This support could include some research, writing, administration tasks and communications work.
  • Social media support for both the SFT and Fir Farm.
  • Supporting updates to the SFT and Fir Farm websites.
  • Developing and designing a brochure for Fir Farm’s Hill Barn venue.
  • Some tracking and reporting, such as website and social media analytics or mentions in the media.
  • Support in organising events and attending events, including summer farm visits.

Qualifications and experience

We are looking for applicants who demonstrate an understanding of sustainable food and farming and who have a passion for supporting the development of such systems.

Strong organisational skills and writing ability are a must. Some experience in communications, research or writing would be desirable. Applicants will need to be self-starting and efficient, able to work independently, manage multiple tasks and respond to things quickly.

We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate the following:

  • Excellent organisational skills.
  • Excellent written communication skills and an ability to write in different styles and present factual information or scientific data in an accessible way.
  • Experience using social media platforms.
  • Some experience with websites would be desirable.
  • Knowledge of farming and food systems.
  • Ability to use Excel and Microsoft.
  • A positive and enthusiastic attitude. Flexibility and the ability to work alone or as a team is a must.
