Are you looking for a rewarding role which will combine your farming skills and experience with a knowledge and passion for biodiversity and conservation?

The Heart of England Forest is an exciting and ambitious charity working hard to create a huge new woodland in the heart of the country that will benefit people and wildlife for generations to come.

We take our mission very seriously; it has never been more important to invest in our natural environment. Planting trees and creating new woodlands is no longer just a positive ambition for the country, it’s absolutely essential. It is the simplest solution to help mitigate climate change and create new green spaces that can help reconnect people and communities with nature and the natural environment.

Our goal is to reach 30,000 acres of semi contiguous forest by planting 13 million native broadleaf trees. To date we have planted almost 1.9 million trees across 7,000 acres – a mosaic of habitats including woodland, grassland, wetland and heathland. The significance and scale of our work cannot be underestimated: The Heart of England Forest - already the largest new native forest in the country – will become one of the largest forests in the UK.

Farming is already a core activity in the Forest. As an established organic livestock farm, our aspirations are to become a centre of excellence for agroforestry, raising livestock within the Forest and showcasing the benefits to both the Forest and our livestock of this symbiotic relationship.

If you share our ambition, we have an exciting opportunity for you to join us. The charity is a rewarding place to work and offers its staff a number of benefits.

Conservation Farmer - Salary £30,000 plus benefits

With the current farming system under intense scrutiny, we are looking for an enthusiastic individual passionate about conservation farming to demonstrate that biodiversity-rich landscapes can also be productive for food.

The Conservation Farmer is responsible for the development and management of the Heart of England Forest’s livestock grazing programme to ensure that animals are available for grazing on a wide range of habitats throughout the Forest. This is a unique role which will give the successful candidate an opportunity to grow and shape the agroforestry element of England’s largest new native broadleaf forest. We are looking for someone with livestock husbandry experience, committed to high standards of animal welfare. Absolutely key is a “can do” attitude, and we need someone keen to learn who will be a passionate ambassador for the charity.

The ideal candidate will be a team player, comfortable with working on their own for significant periods, and undertaking all aspects of farm work as required, from animal husbandry to arable, and accurate paper and electronic record keeping to general farm maintenance.

We would love to hear from an experienced farm worker able to use their own initiative, looking for their next challenge, who is committed to conservation and enthusiastic about the use of grazing animals to improve our natural environment.
