Are you a Scientist looking for the next step in your career? Do you have experience working within wastewater? If so, we have an excellent opportunity for you to join our team as an Area Scientist!

What can I expect?

Wessex Water treats 480 million litres of sewage from 2.8 million people in the South West. Our Scientists help ensure that we not only comply with all the regulatory requirements but make sure there is no detrimental impact to the environment through our operations. Within the Southern Science team, you will report to the Southern Lead Scientist and work in partnership with other Area Scientists.

As an Area Scientist you will ensure compliance with quality standards at water recycling centres, including numerical, descriptive and flow permits, as well as bathing water standards. You will plan and install measures to improve quality and lead initiatives to reduce operational costs and minimise pollutions.

This role will involve monitoring and optimising the effectiveness of sewage treatment processes, optimising the use of treatment chemicals and providing process support in operational emergencies. You will provide technical support to operational staff to protect and maintain quality and innovate new operational practices. You will also liaise with various internal and external stakeholders, including the Environment Agency.

The ideal person

We are looking for a skilled, self-motivated individual who is efficient in problem solving, communicating, teamworking and has the ability to plan and prioritise work effectively.

In addition, you will have:

  • A degree or equivalent in a science, environmental or engineering subject
  • Extensive knowledge and operational experience of sewage treatment
  • IT literacy
  • A full driving licence
  • Expertise in advance treatment and sludge process is desired
