Role Overview

The focus of the role will be developing MoJ’s circular economy policy across our prison Property as well as across our commercial or project delivery. We are looking for a keen individual to shape our position based on circular economy principles, ensuring our waste management policy is as innovative, sustainable and forward-thinking as possible. The individual would be responsible for improving our understanding on waste composition across the MoJ Property, improving the use of resources wherever possible and embedding circular economy principles throughout MoJ operations.

If you are inspired by the extensive scope of this role, love working at pace across diverse teams, enjoy using innovations and your initiative to solve complex problems and have brilliant communication and persuasion skills - we want to hear from you.

Team Overview

You will be part of a lively and creative multidisciplinary team responsible for the delivery of key MoJ sustainability priorities. The MoJ intends to be a sustainability leader within Whitehall, and as such, seeks high performing and highly motivated individuals to inspire and deliver meaningful environmental improvements. We work collaboratively across our areas of expertise to deliver positive environmental outcomes across a large range of themes including:

  • Meeting the Greening Government Commitment target (GGC)
  • Energy management & carbon reduction in line with net zero carbon ambitions
  • Waste management and circular resource models
  • Water efficiency
  • Sustainable construction
  • Sustainable procurement
  • Sustainable travel
  • Biodiversity protection and enhancement.

The Sustainability Team is responsible for embedding environmental sustainability across MoJ, its agencies (including prisons, courts and probation centres) and its Arm’s Length Bodies. This includes the department’s policy making, operations, finance, governance, estates and commercial activity. Working in a large and diverse organisation presents the team with huge scope to deliver national scale sustainability leadership.

Job Description, Duties and Responsibilities

You will work with colleagues across MoJ on all matters relating to waste management policy and to the circular economy. The tasks will range from providing specialist advice to colleagues, working with Facilities Management teams, identifying innovative solutions to reduce waste to managing and responding to data reporting.

You will:

  • Deliver recommendations of the MoJ Waste and Resource Management Strategy
  • Improve the Sustainability Team’s understanding of waste composition by gathering and interrogating relevant data through prison waste studies.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of circular economy policies across MoJ including identifying and planning for changes to MoJ operations, contracts and prison industries
  • Work closely with our prisoner rehabilitation programmes to introduce the circular economy principles to prison industries.
  • As a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on waste, review waste and resource management proposals, making appropriate recommendations for acceptance or rejection, and evaluate success of completed projects and report on savings achieved.
  • Work closely with Facilities Management teams to identify measures including no cost and low-cost water saving opportunities, often through data analysis.
  • Provide technical advice and support to colleagues across MoJ on legislation, policy and procurement relating to waste management
  • Liaise with other Government departments on waste, the circular economy and related-environmental issues.

We operate in a fast paced and complex environment, so you must be flexible and resilient. A big part of what we do is delivered through others, so you will need to be enabling and inspiring to bring others on board with our vision
