Environment & Ecology GIS Officer  - The primary function of your role will be to ensure the Councils GIS system is updated and to support colleges in getting the most from the GIS data. We receive regular updates from partners such as the Biological Records Centre as well as ad hoc updates which may require conversion from other GIS systems into QGIS. Changes in the Councils landscape management are ongoing as well as adoptions of new land that need to be added; as this is the basis of the contract and informs our biodiversity strategy. Through the impending Environment Bill and the recent Planning for the future consultation it is clear the Government sees the importance of a data driven decision making process. As the detail emerges the need to identify and map Ecosystem Services, Local Nature Recovery areas and biodiversity off setting will be required and GIS will key to both mapping and decision making You will need to be a self-starter and use your initiative, seek opportunities for knowledge sharing and be able to work effectively as part of a busy team whilst managing your own workload. All of our work involves a high level of communication and a willingness to work with colleges across the council and key stakeholders. You must therefore be a clear communicator and capable of explaining technical matters clearly and sensitively at all levels. The Post is for an initial Period of 2 years.

Key Duties

  • Providing technical GIS coordination, support and delivering outputs related to environmental, planning and landscape.
  • Data management, data visualisations, cartography, spatial analysis, and other GIS linked tasks
  • Producing project related correspondence, reports and GIS outputs, including technical report writing, statistics, web apps and mapping
  • Deliver GIS support and training to staff and the partners as required

Experience, Qualifications and any Mandatory Requirements

  • A degree in GIS, Geography, Environmental Science (with a strong focus on GIS) or similar
  • Member of a relevant professional institution or have demonstrable experience
  • Ecological knowledge or experience desirable

Skills Required

  • Proficient in the use of GIS based system, in particular QGIS and the ability to import data from other systems
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, the public and third parties
