About the role

This role is focused on ensuring high performing Country Parks across Essex, effectively managing the green spaces as hubs for biodiversity, and leading the development and implementation of robust business plans, whilst ensuring our long term strategic aims are met, in line with the climate change agenda, and delivering exemplary levels of service to the citizens of Essex and visitors.

As a line manager, you will provide guidance to your employees whilst also managing the recruitment, induction, training, work planning, evaluating performance, managing conduct and disciplinary matters. You will also ensure training and development plans are up to date and meet compliance.

Within this role, you will provide insights around the overall maintenance and health and safety plans for the Country Parks, driving the development and implementation of consistent processes, controls, ways of working and operational practices.

As a leader, you will drive change initiatives, develop a continuous improvement ethos amongst employees, encourage challenge and identify investment in projects that drive new revenue streams.

Collaborative working is also key to this role, building strong relationships with key stakeholders, internally and externally; working closely with internal partners and clients, as well as third party commercial relationships and other councils, continually promoting a culture of excellence, professionalism and consistent communication.

You will also be expected to produce regular financial and non-financial performance reports against agreed key performance indicators, developing and maintaining robust systems to monitor and review service performance to ensure the service is achieving its financial and quality targets.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

We’re looking for an excellent leader, with strong communication, excellent attention to detail and people management skills, leading and managing a large geographically dispersed service, with an understanding of land management practises and conservation issues. A broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety issues and relevant legislation, is key for this role.

You should be analytical in your approach, commercially astute and able to identify opportunities for business change and improvement, resolving problems efficiently. You should be able to demonstrate strong budget management, budgetary control, and implementation of spending plans.

This role requires someone innovative, able to make improvements and suggest new revenue streams, whilst also managing their employees effectively, and meeting financial targets. Naturally you should work well within a team, have excellent time management skills, be confident in prioritising tasks, and possess strong IT skills.

Ideally, you will be educated to degree level in land management, countryside management, business management or operations management, or equivalent in experience, with evidence of continuing professional development and expert knowledge in relevant professional area.
