Summary

Vivid Economics is a mission-driven, strategic economics consultancy that works with clients in both the public and private sectors to tackle some of the biggest sustainability issues facing our world today. Headquartered in London and with projects that spans the globe, we are renowned for ‘putting economics to good use’ to impact public policy and commercial decision-making. Our expertise and cutting-edge analytical tools are used across a wide variety of sectors, and we pride ourselves on the depth of our knowledge and the flexibility with which we approach change.

We are currently looking for a Land System Modeller to join our Natural Resources practice group. The position demands the ability to develop and maintain complex systems models and deploy them to create findings that are relevant to a diverse set of clients across the agriculture, forestry, and water sectors.

The person will lead the ongoing development of Vivid’s land system modelling capabilities and contribute expertise to development of Vivid’s spatial analytical tools in biodiversity and water. We use these models to develop future scenarios of the world’s land system, with a focus on the zero carbon and nature positive transitions.

The role will also involve working across Vivid’s wider project base, contributing analysis and insights on land use systems. Over time, the role could evolve to include business development and build-out of Vivid’s broader modelling toolkit. This role offers the opportunity to develop a broad range of skills in a vibrant and company with a large and growing portfolio of projects.

Vivid Economics is committed to diversity and inclusion and welcomes all applicants regardless of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex or sexual orientation.

Description of the role

We are considering candidates at two levels, Technical Expert and Technical Manager. At both levels, the main responsibilities of the Land System Modeller are to apply land use modelling tools, including open-source frameworks such as MAgPIE or CLUE as well as proprietary frameworks, to generate insights in project work and to develop Vivid’s in-house land use modelling capabilities.

Land use modelling experience could include integrated assessment modelling, biophysical or bio-economic modelling, or spatially explicit crop or commodity modelling. Ideally this work would have been used in a wide range of contexts, from shaping policy to informing investment strategy.

The candidate should be aware of trends in the land system, where markets are in flux globally due to technological and policy-driven changes. Our pipeline of work covers a range of cutting-edge topics such as the modelling of the zero-carbon transition, the nature-positive transition, forecasting long-term commodity dynamics, and exploring how agricultural innovations enable transitions. A high level of understanding of current trends, and a desire to deepen this knowledge and remain up to date is essential.

The role will involve working in teams, including some management of junior staff, and independently to formulate evidence-based insights and translate them into credible, clear and compelling advice. Experience in strategic advisory work is advantageous, either in a corporate, government or research context.

Candidates with a particularly strong track record of delivery, including the management of small teams undertaking complicated workstreams, alongside significant subject matter expertise will be considered for the more senior position, Technical Manager. Unlike a Technical Expert, a Technical Manager is expected to oversee multiple workstreams carried by teams of 2-4 more junior staff and to play a significant strategic role in shaping asset and product development.

A Technical Manager will typically report to a Principal or a Director, while a Technical Expert may also report to a Technical Manager or Engagement Manager.

The geographic focus is broad, including Europe, and a number of countries in Africa, Asia, and the Americas, as is the client base, which includes energy multinationals, commodities traders, government departments, development banks and non-governmental organisations. Some international travel is expected but should not be extensive unless desired.

Experience and qualifications

We seek a person with core experience, but also a proven interest and ability in developing and adapting a variety of approaches to create novel insights and drive the leading edge of analytic approaches.

Essential skills and experience:

  • A track record of deploying land system modelling to shape policies or strategies in government, consultancy, academia, industry or a financial institution.
  • Excellent modelling and coding skills, including Python, R and ideally GAMS.
  • Familiarity with a wide range of land system models including but not limited to open-source frameworks such as MAgPIE or CLUE
  • Strong knowledge of and interest in the land system and the associated sectors of agriculture, forestry or water.
  • Desirable skills and experience
  • Consultancy or other private sector experience and/or project management and business development experience are also highly desirable.
  • An MSc or Ph.D in economics, mathematics, engineering, physics, or a closely related field is required.
