Dacorum Borough Council declared a Climate and Ecological Emergency in 2019 and have set a target of being net-zero as an organisation by 2030 and to decarbonise the Council’s housing stock by 2050. The Council have also pledged to support and enable the lowering of emissions throughout the borough as much, and as quickly, as possible.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the team delivering this work. The Council are seeking a proactive and passionate individual, with a demonstrable dedication to addressing the Climate and Ecological Emergency. A thorough understanding of sustainability policies and technical knowledge of the issues surrounding climate change and the reduction of carbon emissions is required.

Key responsibilities will include data analysis, monitoring and reporting, project management, public engagement and communications. The individual must be equipped with excellent analytical, organisational and communication skills, as well as the experience and expertise to drive projects forward and support change across communities and our organisation.

The Sustainability Officer will be working to support the Climate Emergency and Sustainability Programme Lead Officer, to develop, co-ordinate, deliver and evaluate the actions identified in the Council’s Climate and Ecological Emergency Strategy and Action plan and associated data recording and monitoring activities. The action plan is designed to help the Council achieve its ambitious carbon reduction and environmental targets and pulls together a variety of initiatives from across all Council services.

The role will play an instrumental part in helping to develop, manage and/or support projects, campaigns and initiatives that take place both internally within the council (e.g. policies and staff initiatives to help reduce or offset greenhouse gas emissions from the Council’s buildings and fleet), as well as externally (e.g. community events and initiatives).

The ideal candidate will need to be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, have experience managing a high workload and meeting tight deadlines.
