Rangers play an important role at the National Trust, and through thinking about the long term help us to look after our special places forever, for everyone. You'll be leading the Ranger team at an exciting time and will be pivotal in driving forward both great conservation and an outstanding experience for visitors in our outdoor spaces.

What it's like to work here

Take a trip back in time to the 1760s at this spectacular Neo-classical mansion framed by outstanding historic parkland.

With over 800 acres of parkland, woodland and wood pasture, Kedleston Park is a green lung on the urban fringe of Derby. An 18th Century naturalistic landscape, with a treasure trove of Veteran trees and designed views. Kedleston is a wildlife haven and Site of Special Scientific Interest providing a home to White-clawed Crayfish, Red Kites, Otters and rare invertebrates.

With a team of dedicated and enthusiastic Rangers (staff and volunteers) you will continue to improve the biodiversity of this special site while also welcoming over 200,000 visits each year. Key projects this year include hedgerow planting, management of new wildflower meadows and work to protect our White-clawed Crayfish.

Longer term projects include working with key stakeholders to write a new Parkland Management Plan, development of more accessible paths across the Park, and phased works to de-silt Kedleston’s Lake System.

Three further satellite sites sit beyond the boundary, including one of the first sites the National Trust owned in Derbyshire, Alport Heights.

What you'll be doing

This role involves being part of the wider leadership team who care for the Kedleston portfolio. You’ll report directly to the General Manager and will manage a team of highly capable Rangers and volunteers to ensure great conservation of our Parkland and satellite sites including the creation and delivery of our Parkland Management Plan, Higher Level Stewardship and Countryside Stewardship agreements.

You'll also have delegated responsibility for managing the budgets required to deliver this work and for protecting and enhancing the Trust’s assets and reputation.

This role offers a great opportunity for someone who already has experience of leading a Ranger and volunteer team with strong project management and practical skills. You'll need extensive knowledge of land management and a track record of delivering to a high standard. In this management role, you'll be a confident and articulate communicator, a skilled and driven leader. Central to the role will be your ability to balance both the demands of managing and developing our Parkland and portfolio sites, with the demands of a busy, high profile visitor environment.
