We have a fantastic opportunity for an enthusiastic individual to join a small cross-disciplinary team at the RSPB Centre for Conservation Science, to assist in the development of scenario-based spatial modelling of competing land uses in the UK, as society tries to balance food production, conservation priorities and achieving meaningful greenhouse gas mitigation.

In addition, the post-holder will contribute to the Department's overall role in establishing the scientific basis of RSPB policy and practice in conservation and seek to increase its standing in the field of conservation science, which is essential to achieving credibility in environmental policy matters.

What the role is about:

Climate change and biodiversity loss are affecting people and nature, and land management will be key to ameliorating the effects of both. We are seeking a talented conservation scientist with good GIS and analytical skills to join a project examining the spatial conservation, climate change mitigation and food production consequences of land management, habitat restoration and renewable energy siting decisions in the UK. You will join a small team examining the effects of potential future policies in the land management sectors aimed at reaching NetZero by 2050, on the food provision and nature conservation potential of the UK, and will help to integrate land demand for renewable energy technologies into this framework. The post-holder will be responsible for translating future renewable energy demand scenarios into likely land take, and integrating this into our spatial models, to examine the likely impacts of increased provision of low carbon energy on the UK’s ability to produce food, fibre and Nature-based solutions to climate change. This is a 1 year fixed-term contract to extend existing work to cover future renewable energy deployment.

Essential skills, knowledge and experience:

  • Proven scientific background (eg a PhD or equivalent experience managing a project)
  • Skilled in the handling and manipulating spatial data in R and other GIS mapping software
  • You will show willingness to learn new techniques and programmes.
  • You will have a working knowledge of one or more of the following:
    • Knowledge of climate change mitigation/ policy – especially Land/Energy sectors
    • Knowledge of renewables
    • Knowledge of the potential impact of climate change mitigation measures on biodiversity
  • You will have a methodical and rigorous approach to experimental design, data collection, data management and analysis ensuring data and results pass international peer-reviewed standards of scrutiny and audit.
  • You will be self-motivated and work efficiently within a defined work plan to meet deadlines, being able to plan and organise your work and manage the work of others.

Desirable skills, knowledge and experience:

  • You will have experience of scenario design and evaluation
  • You will have good knowledge of UK ecology and natural history as well as of conservation issues and practice.
  • You will be an effective communicator, tailoring high quality written materials for a range of audiences and using a range of communications channels to publicise the project, from the planning stage to sharing results.
  • You will be a skilled collaborative worker, with experience working with a range of stakeholders, for instance, policy makers, communications staff or decision makers.
  • You will have a track record of scientific publications and other science communications

This is a full time 12 month contract 37.5 hours per week.
