About us

John Wenman Ecological Consultancy LLP is an independent ecological consultancy established in 2006 and based in Wokingham, Berkshire. We carry out a varied range of ecological survey, impact assessment, research and mitigation work throughout the UK, but particularly within the south east. We specialise in bat surveys and mitigation and work with a wide range of clients in the private and public sectors. Our work includes smaller and larger scale projects, and we have a good track record of delivering high quality ecological advice provided by a knowledgeable and professional team.

Ecologist (Wokingham, Berkshire)

The role:

We have an increasing workload and are looking for an ecologist to join our close-knit team on a full-time basis. This role will be an opportunity to undertake and lead on bat and ecological surveys and mitigation projects for a wide range of protected species and habitats and develop your career as an ecologist. We are looking for someone to share their ecological expertise, supporting junior staff in a supportive and friendly environment, and to provide reports for our clients to a high standard. The position will be based at our Berkshire office, but we are currently working remotely and there will continue to be opportunities to work from home. Site work may be located anywhere in the UK, but with most of our work is in the south east and close to our Berkshire office. The applicant should have good organisational skills and be self-motivated. The role’s responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and undertaking ecological surveys including preliminary bat roost assessments, preliminary ecological appraisals and protected species surveys;
  • Evening and night bat survey work, collection and analysis of bat detector data;
  • Ecological Clerk of Work duties;
  • Preparation of technical reports including mitigation and enhancement strategies and liaison with clients and contractors.

Skills and experience

Essential

  • Degree in Ecology or closely related discipline;
  • At least three years’ experience in an ecological consultancy or similar role;
  • Registered under bat survey class licence (Level 1 (CL17) minimum);
  • Demonstrable experience of carrying out preliminary and emergence/re-entry bat surveys and analysing survey data;
  • Membership of Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM);
  • Competent at protected species and habitat survey techniques (Extended Phase 1 and Preliminary Ecological Appraisal);
  • Comprehensive knowledge of ecological survey and mitigation techniques,
  • Good understanding of relevant UK and European legislation, policy and guidance;
  • Excellent communication, report writing and data management skills with a close attention to detail;
  • Full driving licence and use of own vehicle.

Beneficial

  • Protected species survey class licence registrations for other species particularly great crested newt;
  • Experience of using GIS software (especially QGIS);
  • Registered under bat survey class licence (Level 2 (CL18) or above);
  • Named ecologist on EPS mitigation licences;
  • Masters degree in Ecology or closely related discipline;
