The Conservation Volunteers – The Community Volunteering Charity

Every day TCV works across the UK to create healthier and happier communities for everyone - communities where our activities have a lasting impact on people’s health, prospects and outdoor places.

About the role:

The York branch has been running environmental projects in York and North Yorkshire for over 30 years.

We are seeking a highly motivated, adaptable and committed person to join the York Conservation Volunteers team for this important post. This post holder will manage primarily the well-established Midweek Volunteer Group alongside the existing Project Officer. This volunteer group delivers a varied programme of potentially large scale practical environmental projects in urban and rural locations every week throughout the year. The role is primarily weekdays, (Tuesday to Friday) but with one Sunday practical task each month with time off in lieu.

This role is primarily field based. Key responsibilities of this post include - managing, supporting and supervising teams of volunteers carrying out practical projects; developing and planning weekly paid practical project work through liaising with partners and land managers; developing plans and quotes for clients; managing Key Volunteers and Voluntary Officers; resource & equipment management and logistics, together with publicity and fundraising. The role will also support the Community & Education Senior Project Officer to deliver the practical elements of that work programme, 1 day/week has been allocated to this, but this may be flexible as required.

The successful applicant will have had several years of experience working in the environment sector or similar. Be able to plan large scale and potentially complex practical projects including ordering materials and other logistics. Be able to demonstrate an understanding of a range of practical conservation tasks, experience in supervising groups of people, which may include vulnerable adults and people with learning difficulties. An ability to communicate effectively with people with varying abilities as well as children, together with personal qualities of resourcefulness and flexibility.

Competency certification to operate a variety of machinery and powered equipment relevant to the sector would be advantageous. We regularly use equipment such as Chainsaws and Brush Cutters, and occasionally use larger plant such as Excavators, Tractors and Dumpers.

You will be required to drive a 9-seater small minibus. For insurance this means you must meet the TCV minibus driving requirements. A standard full UK Driving license is required.

  • A full driving licence is required as the post holder has use of a company vehicle.
  • This post is subject to an enhanced CRC check.
  • A CV and covering letter is required.

A bit more about us:

We recognise that each community and the people living there have different needs. Whether improving wellbeing, conserving a well-loved outdoor space or bringing people together to promote social cohesion and combat loneliness, TCV works together with communities to deliver practical solutions to the real-life challenges they face.

For over 60 years we have adapted our work with volunteers to reflect the changing needs of communities in the UK and, by giving people a sense of purpose and belonging, we have empowered them to take control of their lives and outdoor spaces for the benefit of all.

Whilst our activities vary, our inclusive approach has remained consistent; bringing people and places together to create happy, healthy and connected communities for everyone.
