Job Description:

We are recruiting for a Consultant to support the growing portfolio of projects within our Local Environment Team. You will work predominantly in the areas of waste operations and resources management. You will be involved in multiple projects simultaneously, working predominantly to support UK local authorities in a diverse range of activities. These will range from strategic projects, such as developing waste strategies in response to new legislation and modelling the cost and performance of different waste collection schemes, through to more operationally-focused projects in infrastructure design, contract procurement and supporting the implementation of new collection schemes.

You will be flexible, comfortable under pressure, have a strong work ethic, and an ability to learn technical work in a range of areas rapidly. You will be a self-starter, highly organised, and share our commitment to a high quality of work. A personal interest in, and commitment to, environmental and sustainability issues is expected.

Reports to:

Senior or Principal Consultant

Essential Criteria:

  • 2-3 years’ experience in roles where you have engaged with issues in waste and resources management;
  • Strong technical understanding of waste operations and resources management in at least two of the following areas:
    • Comparing household waste collection options;
    • Local authority waste strategy;
    • Implementation of new waste collection services;
    • Waste transfer station and/or HWRC policy or design improvements;
    • Waste service efficiency improvement;
    • Impacts of partnership working in waste collection/treatment;
    • Commercial waste services; and
    • Waste treatment and sorting.
  • Demonstrable experience of working on projects to time, budget and client satisfaction;
  • Excellent research and data analysis skills, including manipulation of large datasets;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills including technical report writing and client presentation;

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience of working within the consultancy business model;
  • Understanding of local authority waste and recycling collection service delivery;
  • Experience of having contributed to successful business development activity.


£28,000 to £33,500 depending on skills and experience.

Holiday Entitlement:

24 days per year (plus Bank Holidays) rising by 1 day each year to a maximum of 30 days per year.
