MCS Charitable Foundation is an independent UK-wide charity working to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy and low carbon technologies. Homes and buildings account for around 30% of the UK’s carbon emissions so our sector has a crucial role to play in the drive for net zero. As a Charity with strong links to government, industry and the NGO sector, we have a leading role to play in driving that change.

The Foundation was set up by the UK Government in 2018 to take ownership of the MCS standards scheme – now run through MCS Service Company – and use the scheme’s profits to invest in initiatives that support growth in the sector. We now have an established grants and research programme focused on initiatives that can drive a step-change impact.

The MCS Charity and Company have a shared MCS Group External Affairs Strategy aimed at using our leading position in the sector to advocate for the policy changes needed to deliver the net zero target. Our key campaigns focus on: pressing for the scrapping of VAT on green technologies; seeking an earlier date for the introduction of net zero requirements in new build homes; and working for comprehensive consumer information services and green finance packages to enable the mass scale retrofitting of homes across the UK.

MCS Charitable Foundation is seeking a Research and Campaigns Officer to carry out research and analysis, and write key policy and campaign documents in support of its External Affairs strategy. The role will work across the Charity and its trading subsidiary, MCS Service Company, which runs the standards scheme for small scale renewables. As a leading organisation in the green homes sector, MCS has ambitious goals to influence public policy to accelerate the drive for net zero carbon emissions and this position will play an integral role in supporting this work.

The Research and Campaigns Officer is a new position that plays a key role in supporting the delivery of the MCS Group External Affairs Strategy. The postholder will carry out research and analysis to inform development of key policy positions, reports, Parliamentary briefings and government consultations. Working with the Director of External Affairs, you will be a key author of all such group policy documents.

The post will work across a range of themes relevant to renewable technologies, housing retrofit and the associated green economy, supporting the objectives of MCS Charity and Company. You will work closely with colleagues across MCS Group and partner organisations, drawing on existing knowledge, carrying out your own research and helping manage research carried out from time to time by specialist external extractors.
