ABOUT US

The Woodland Trust is the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity. We want to see a UK rich in native woods and trees, for people and wildlife. The Trust aims to engage and inspire people about woods and trees to help us meet our vision of creating, restoring and protecting woodland. We own and care for over 1,000 woodland sites across the United Kingdom and support the creation and management of woodland on land outside the Trust’s own estate.

THE ROLE

The North of England has significantly less woodland cover than the rest of the country, and along-side our partners we are establishing at least 50 million trees over the next 25 years and transforming the landscape of Northern England. We’re recruiting for two Woodland Outreach Advisers, who will be key parts of this initiative, delivering woodland conservation outcomes primarily through creation of native wooded habitats and tree establishment on land outside the Trust’s own estate, contributing to the Trust’s objective of landscape scale ecological change. This will be achieved through providing appropriate advice to landowners and managers, managing contractors and consultants, and development and delivery of landscape scale projects and partnerships with other organisations. These roles will contribute to a Defra funded grant programme (via the Nature for Climate Fund), and one role will have a specific focus on innovation, developing and testing new models for unlocking land, blending finance and ultimately creating new woodland.

THE CANDIDATE

This is an excellent opportunity for the right person to help deliver a large scale partnership initiative, so you’ll need experience working on landscape scale projects ideally where this engages with individual farmers and landowners, organisations, businesses and local authorities. In addition you’ll need the ability to deliver through others including partnerships, contractors, and professional consultants.

Results driven and innovative, you’ll need a good knowledge of the relevant landscape and experience in woodland creation, both on the ground and advising others, alongside a good working knowledge of land management practices, and an ability to understand and engage with landowners and land managers from a variety of different practices and backgrounds. An understanding of natural capital or payment for ecosystem services approaches, green finance, woodland carbon and other ways to unlock funding and land for woodland creation that extend beyond the traditional route of state-funded grants would be beneficial.

These roles are based in the Northern Forest which covers a large area either side of the M62 corridor from Liverpool to Hull, stretching as far north as the Yorkshire Dales and as far south as Derbyshire. The successful candidates will need to be located within this area and be willing to travel.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

There’s no other organisation like the Woodland Trust. Whatever you do here you will be supporting our work to protect and enhance woods and trees. In return we recognise and value our people. You'll have our full support, training and opportunities for professional development, along with a contributory pension, life assurance and good holiday entitlement.
