Sectors: conservation & wildlife

Closing date: Sunday, 7th March 2021

The Woodland Trust is the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity. We want to see a UK rich in native woods and trees, for people and wildlife. The Trust aims to engage and inspire people about woods and trees to help us meet our vision of creating, restoring and protecting woodland. We own and care for over 1,000 woodland sites across the United Kingdom and support the creation and management of woodland on land outside the Trust’s own estate.

The North of England has significantly less woodland cover than the rest of the country, and along-side our partners we are establishing at least 50 million trees over the next 25 years to create the Northern Forest. We’re recruiting a Woodland Creation Manager to lead, facilitate and coordinate the delivery of the Woodland Trust’s ambitious four-year programme of new native woodland creation and tree establishment in this area. This will be supported by Defra funding (via the Nature for Climate Fund), and achieved through provision of grants, direct advice to landowners and working through partners. This is a senior role, line managing two new advisers and working closely with the established outreach team to ensure targets are met. The Woodland Creation Manager will maintain the overview of our woodland creation programme, support advisers in developing and managing partnerships and innovative woodland creation schemes, monitor and report on outputs and work with external stakeholders to overcome barriers and maximise opportunities for trees, woods and wildlife.

This is an excellent opportunity for the right person to facilitate the Woodland Trust’s ambitious four-year programme of new native woodland creation and tree establishment within the Northern Forest, so you’ll need experience managing complex programmes of work, demonstrating vision but also attention to detail and very clear communication. In addition you’ll need to be an inspirational and collaborative leader with experience managing people and a track record of leading and developing an effective and motivated team to deliver stretching targets. Results driven and self-motivated you’ll need a good working knowledge of land management practices, and an ability to understand and engage with landowners and their representatives, alongside experience of developing and managing effective partnerships that deliver multiple high quality outcomes for the benefit of the respective organisations.

This role is based across the Northern Forest which covers a large area either side of the M62 corridor from Liverpool to Hull, stretching as far north as the Yorkshire Dales and as far south as Derbyshire. The successful candidates will need to be located within this area and be willing to travel.

There’s no other organisation like the Woodland Trust. Whatever you do here you will be supporting our work to protect and enhance woods and trees. In return we recognise and value our people. You'll have our full support, training and opportunities for professional development, along with a contributory pension, life assurance and good holiday entitlement.
