The Environmental Team provides specialist support to the South West Design Services Contract, in particular with the completion of ecological surveys, ecological impact assessment of projects, on site supervision, Environmental feasibility studies and scheme designs.

As Environmental Specialist you will support the Senior Environment & Sustainability Manager and Environmental Design Team Lead to coordinate and advise on all ecological and sustainability issues, with a particular focus on the northern region. You will assist with the supervision, inspection and site approval of relevant sub-contractor works.

You will ensure timely delivery of environmental assessments and associated documentation for SWDSC schemes (using the DMRB), drawing on other specialist resource in the Environment Team and/or the design supply chain as required. You will conduct surveys and contribute to the environmental impact assessment of works proposals, including the recommendation, design and implementation of appropriate mitigation.

Part of the role will be attending regular team meetings to highlight progress and any environmental issues and promoting environmental principles and best practice while contributing to the environmental scheme forward programme.

What are we looking for? 

To be successful in this role you will be Environmental/Sustainability degree qualified or equivalent. Be a member of an Environmental/Sustainability institute (IEMA) and working towards Chartership (CEnv).

You will need good knowledge of the environment and sustainability agenda and best practices and associated legislations.

Although not essential it would be beneficial if you had experience in ecological surveys including Extended Phase 1 habitat surveys and protected species surveys. Environmental Impact Assessment experience, preferably with use of the Highways Agency guidance document 'Design Manual for Roads & Bridges' (DMRB). Good knowledge of native flora and fauna species, and associated legislation. Experience in commissioning surveys and liaising with licensing bodies. Previous experience with the HA BAP, UK BAP and local BAPs and possession of protected species licenses (bat and dormouse).
